"Roy Montgomery taught me what it meant to be a cop. He taught me that we are bound by our choices, but we are more than our mistakes. Captain Montgomery once said to me that, for us there is no victory. There are only battles. And in the end, the best you could hope for is to find a place to make your stand. And if you're very lucky, you find someone willing to stand with you. Our captain would want us to carry on the fight. And even if there is…"

*As Kate Beckett continued on with her speech at Captain Montgomery's funeral, there was something strange in the distance that caught Rick Castle's attention. A flash of light was enough to raise a red flag and take him away from this funeral. Little to anybody's knowledge, a sniper was taking aim on the young detective that was speaking at the podium. It clicked in Castle's head what was happening, and then realizing the source of the split second flash of light.*

"KATE!"

*He screamed once the bullet was fired, not hesitating or thinking twice about springing into action for the sake of his partner. A moment of shocked silence came over the crowd before they all dropped to their knees for cover, closely followed by gasps and screams*

*Kate's eyes opened and she found herself laying on the ground. She did a 10 fingers, 10 toes check while she sat up, trying to process what just took place. She turned her head, and saw Castle laying a few feet away.*

"Castle!"

*She called out for him, but no replay*

"Castle!"

*She called out again, this time more panic and fear in her tone. She crawled to his side, the crawl only a few feet but felt like it went on for miles. As she reached him, her hand rested in a pool of warm, wet, and sticky liquid. She didn't need to look to know her hand was now sitting in blood. But not just anybody's blood. Castle's blood.*
