Hazel looked down at Rome, which was now just a speck behind the Argo II. Hazel didn't move her eyes from the speck. Maybe if she didn't look away, she could bring Percy and Annabeth out of Tartarus through sheer willpower. Then she could apologize for being so useless when they most needed her.

"Come on, Dad." she said kicking the railing. "If you're gonna give me witchy powers, at least make them useful."

"Hazel? Who are you talking to?" Frank appeared behind her.

"Schist!" Hazel turned away from Frank quickly, but she couldn't find Speck Rome again. "I lost it!"

Frank shifted uncomfortably on his feet, as if he knew exactly what she'd lost. "Lost what? Are you feeling okay?"

"I lost Speck Rome."

"Oh. Um, okay. Do you want me to leave now?" He stood poised, as if he was ready to run and grab a straightjacket out of Leo's tool belt.

Hazel sighed. "No, stay. I'm sorry I'm being so weird. It's just-"

She broke off and looked up at Frank. To her horror, she started sobbing. Not the pretty, damsel-in-distress movie sobbing, but snotty, wet, normal-people sobbing. "It's all my fault! I know everyone's been saying that, but I was the only one not loading the statue onto the Argo II. I saw the web on Annabeth's ankle before she or Percy did. If I could've been just a little faster, I could've cut it and they wouldn't be where they are now."

Frank wrapped his arms around her and she rested her head on his chest. He stroked her hair thoughtfully, unfazed by Hazel's bawling. "Look, Hazel, I'm not going to pretend to be wise, because that's Annabeth's job. I'm not going to pretend to be fearless, because that's Percy's job. But, I do know that they wouldn't want you to blame yourself. They'd want you to make their sacrifice worth it."

Hazel gave him a watery smile. "Maybe you don't have to be a child of Athena to be wise."
