Sue opened the door to find Jack standing there, arms braced on the door jamb.
"Jack... Wh-?"
"I can't do this anymore."
Sue's brow furrowed. "You can't what?"
Jack stepped in past her and turned to sign. "I can't do this. I thought it was going to be enough that you weren't going anymore, that I could see you at work, but it's not." He stepped toward her. "I want more. I want to see you everyday. I don't want to have to make excuses. I want to wake up with you. I look at the future and I see you in it. I don't... I just... I... You..."
He looked up to find tears in Sue's eyes. "Am I the only one that feels like this? Stop me now if I..." The next words were lost as Sue stepped in to brace her hands on the lapels of his coat and cover his lips with hers. A split second later, Jack responded by pulling her closer and deepening the kiss.
Parting for air shortly after, he rested his forehead on hers. He felt her warm palm on his cheek and his eyes met hers.
"I love you too."
He initiated the kiss this time and the rest, as they say, is history.
It wasn't easy, and sacrifices had to be made, but they were in it for the long run and they made it work.
