He still loved him, which made this all the harder.

"I never thought presenting one piece of evidence would break my heart so much"

Miles couldn't help but think as he stared at the defendant. He didn't want to do this, he really would just rather leave it forgotten at the back of the evidence locker and return home to his life as it was before this case.

But as he watched the defendant smile sadly at him and give him a nod only he noticed he knew that he could not go back to that life ever again. He could not turn his back on the truth that he had finally discovered meant so much to him and he would never forget what that man (damn it Miles can't you even say his name anymore) had done.

In cold blood.

He took a deep breath and pulled out the video tape that depicted the brutal murder of his sister, Franziska Von Karma in detail.

From there everything else was a formality.

He went home that evening and took the few remaining boxes of that man's things and set them on on his front lawn. He dosed them with kerosene and struck a match. The fire burst into life and engulfed everything.

He stood silently just watching as all record of that man turned to ash and Miles knew the other would never be rising back from these ashes.

After all he got his guilty verdict and Phoenix got the chair.

Miles pulled out the hose and washed the ash into the gutter. He then walked back into the house, made himself a cup of tea and pulled out his case file for tomorrow's trial.

After all life had to go on.
