This is my first Harry Potter fanfic. (Please don't murder me! I'm used to writing for a 2,000-story fandom, not a 700,000-story one!)

This just popped into my head one day, so I decided to write it. I hope you enjoy!

"Snape! You're up next!" the Defense teacher called, beckoning Severus forward.

Severus gritted his teeth, stepping forward with his wand outstretched, unsure of what to expect of the shifting form in front of him. He did know one thing, at least, and that was that the Marauders would have something new to torture him about. And this time, it would be his greatest fear.

Lily was standing in front of him. He wrinkled his brow slightly in confusion, but then, suddenly, she was thrown to the floor by some invisible force. She lay there, sprawled out below him, terribly and horribly dead. She was so still it was unnerving. Her eyes stared upward, unseeing.

It wasn't a funny moment, but he remembered his favorite memory of Lily, and suddenly she was alive again. Alive and happy.

"Excellent job, Snape! Pettigrew, you're up!"

As Severus walked to the back of the class, he didn't miss Potter's jeering taunt. "Lily is dead to you anyway, Snivillus. She only cares about me. The great James Potter."

"James…" he heard Lupin mutter, before he tuned them out, focusing his attention on his classmates, remembering each one of their greatest fears in turn.

...Eight Years Later...

When Severus entered the Potter house, the first thing he saw was James, dead. He must have killed Potter before finishing off the son.

He swept over Potter's dead body. Does Lily know he's dead? he wondered.

And then he was climbing the stairs, hoping to see Lily, but knowing she would have already run away. She would have run away to where it was safe. He wouldn't have killed her. He promised.

He entered a bedroom, the boy's, judging by the decorations, and there she was.

Dead.

The real Lily must have fled.

Snape calmly flicked his wand at her dead body. Riddikulus!

But this time, she didn't spring up, alive and smiling.

She was dead.

Cold.

Lifeless.

Forever.
