Handed Off
A drunk woman tossed a 16-year-old girl to Batman. "Batman, I would like you to take my stupid niece as your prodigy. I don't want her anymore, and she'll be more useful to you as a slave than a hero."
Batman quickly took the girl away from her drunken Aunt and towards his car. The young woman was shaken, and she was bruised from head to toe. She didn't want him to touch her at first, but when she realized he could get her away from her old life, she stayed close to his side.
"Don't worry you're safe now I'm going to take you to my mentor you'll be in good hands." The girl nodded but didn't say a word as she got into the back of my car. She stayed silent the whole way back I texted Bruce telling him everything that had happened. He agreed with me in bringing the girl to the cave.
Batcave
When we finally arrived at the cave, I helped the girl out of the car and then I saw a side of Bruce that I have never seen before.
"What is your name young one?"
"Gabriella, Mister Wayne."
"Have you been only raised by your Aunt?"
"No, she only started to take care of me when my parents were killed when I was eight. She got outraged when my parent's fortune didn't go to her but was locked away until I turned 17. So now I don't know what's going to happen to me because when she becomes sober she's going to want me back and I don't want to go back to her."
"Don't worry you won't have to go back to her and I will work with my lawyers so we can make sure your parent's wealth stays with you and you can do what you want to do with it."
"Thank you, Mister Wayne."
"Call me Bruce, Gabriella your family now, Terry can you take Gabriella to one of the extra rooms so she can rest for the night."
"Ok, come on Gabriella let's see if we can't find you some pajama's to wear." The two young people went searching through the mansion. It took awhile for Gabriella to warm up to Bruce and Terry during that time Bruce's lawyers got Gabriella family fortune safely in her hands. The first thing that she did was cut her abuse aunt out of her will. When she finally let go of her fears Bruce was ready to tell her two things one that she was official his heir and the second thing was that if she wanted to, he could train her to be the new Batgirl.
"I would like too, and I will do my best to become the best Batgirl yet." Bruce just gave Gabriella a smile and said to her.
"I know you will." He was very confident in his new daughter's abilities.
5 Months of Training Later
"She's doing great she's learning much quicker than I did."
"Yes, she has. Terry, I finally found out something about Gabriella's family."
"What?"
"Her mother was Mind Diamond a former superhero she retired once she found love and was expecting a child. I do not know what path Gabriella will choose. Whether she follows the footsteps of her ancestors and becomes a great Green Lantern or a powerful telepath, the choice will be hers. "
"Auggh."
"Gabriella" both of the men yelled as they ran to Gabriella's
"Gabriella, Gabriella wake up!" Terry pleaded to Gabriella's still form "Bruce, what's going on?"
"I'm not sure to take her to the Metrotower they'll know how to help her," Bruce commanded, and Terry did as he was told and after he got her into the Batmobile. Then he drove.
"Batman to Superman" Terry contacted Superman
"Superman here, go ahead."
"I have a friend who's in need of medical attention."
"Ok I'm on my way back from a mission, but Warhawk's on duty. I'll tell him to expect you he'll meet you when you arrive."
Metrotower
"How is she?" Bruce asked
"She'll be okay; Aquagirl and Superman want to keep her here until she's back at full strength. Terry explains
"That's fine with me," Bruce said giving his permission
"Also Superman thinks we should look at the …"
"Already working on that, something went wrong in the simulation that hurt her brain." Bruce interrupted
"Okay, I'm going to hang with Gabriella for a few more minutes before heading back out for patrol."
"Negative, I need you back at the Batcave now" Bruce interrupts again
"On my way" Terry answers without further questions
Back at the Batcave
"Look here, she was doing a simulation against Poison Ivy" Bruce explains while they look at simulation tapes.
"She was doing great."
"Yes, but look here she was executing a back flip to break her fall, watch as she's about to land and …"
"That's when she yelled and fell flat on her back," Terry says finishing the sentence.
"Right, I've been going over this same footage in every spectral filter that I know trying to identify what happened, but as you see here, there's nothing," Bruce explains
"Do you know of any villain who can send powerful thought waves that can disrupt a human's thought pattern?"
"Yes, I do, but if that were really what caused Gabriella to lose her focus, we would have also felt it. The only person I can think of is Mind Diamond's sister Mind Dancer, but to contact her we need to get in touch with a Green Lantern." Bruce gives Terry a look
"I think I know an alien" and with that Terry zoomed off inside the Batcar.
Back at the Metrotower
"Hey, GL I need your help."
"Yes, I can who do you want to contact."
"The Lantern who used to be called Mind Dancer."
"Don't worry I've got it" within minutes Green Lantern reached the desired Green Lantern.
"This is Lantern 2101 what do you need. Oh Hi, Taw Wi (TAN Y) it's so nice to see you again."
"You too MDa, I have someone here who needs to talk to you."
"Mind Dancer, I am Batman have you been using your telepathic powers recently."
"Yes."
"Can anyone with the same skills as you know when you're using these powers?"
"Yes, they can."
"Is it dangerous for say an eighteen-year-old girl who has no knowledge of having this type of gift?"
"Yes, it is dangerous, but not a fatal the girl will feel pain for a second and then go into what we call a healing trance. Why are you asking me these questions? Surely this doesn't pertain to you."
"No, they don't, did your sister, may she rest in peace, ever tell you that she had a daughter?"
"No, she didn't, but there were many things that she wouldn't tell me. She was my older sister by only a single day."
"Well she did, and before she could be trained how to use her powers properly, she sister was killed."
"I'll get there as fast as I can."
More Training
As soon as Gabriella's Aunt arrived her training began, during her training, she increased her skill in not only mental training but also in her physical training. Every training simulation she was put into she passed with ease. As well as training her mind and body she also learned about her mom and what she was related. After a while, all of her mentors agreed that she was ready for her first mission.
1st Mission
"These two locations are suspected to be the next to be targeted for robberies. Both of you will stakeout tonight one at each location no communications between the other unless you see the target. Terry, you'll stakeout this sector while Gabriella stakes out this area." Bruce commanded the two heroes
"Can we talk to each other mentally?"
"Only if you think you can handle it?"
"I've got it under control" the two heroes went to their sectors keeping an eye out for their targets.
'Uh oh, trouble.'
'What's going on?' Batman asks
'Some guys dressed up in some ninja outfits, I'm going in.'
'I'll be right behind you.'
Inside the Warehouse
"Hey boys, I believe the ninja costumes are of the twenty-first century, not the twenty-fourth century, but they still need to wait till October you know for Halloween" with that Batgirl's eyes lit up as she turns off the lights and adjusts her sight to night vision.
One after the other each thief fell into a heap. Batgirl turned the lights back on not accounting for the strangler. He flashed a ninja star, and it cut Batgirl in the leg. She screamed both mentally and physically. Just as Batman arrived on the scene, he took care of the stragglers and then went over to check on Batgirl.
"Bruce, Batgirl's hurt pretty bad."
"I know she was able to send me a mental image before she passed out."
"I'm bringing her in."
Back at the Batcave again
"How is she?"
"She'll be okay Terry; the throwing star barely cut her muscle. I've given her something for the pain she'll be asleep for a while."
"Can I visit her?"
"Go ahead" Terry sat by Gabriella's side as she slept keeping a watchful eye on her.
"Hey Gabriella" Terry smiles as he continues to watch over her, but doesn't say anything else
At School
"Gabriella, wait up" Terry calls after the retreating form of his friends back. He didn't like that she was ignoring him, so he quickened his pace and called out her name again.
"Gabriella."
"Oh, hey Terry."
"What's going on?"
"I don't know I fine physically but. . ." Gabriella stopped in the middle of what she was going to say to go into her thinking mode and when she did she usually had to be interrupted, or she would space for who knew how long.
"But what?" Terry interrupted her and got her to think back into reality.
"It's not something that needs to be discussed here."
"Later" Terry smiled
"Later" Gabriella smiled, and the two of them parted ways going to their respective classes.
Later the same day at the Batcave
"This whole week I've been someone's voice in my head, but it isn't Mind Dancer. It sorta sounds like my mom's" Gabriella explained to Terry once they were back at the Mansion.
"But, I thought your mom had killed a long time ago."
"She was I saw her die, but should help me figure out what's going on."
"Who in the world is Teach?"
"Mind Dancer, of course before she had to leave me she and I created a unique mental link so I could contact her at any time."
"So why didn't you contact her when you first heard these voices."
"I did."
"And it just took me this long to get here; it's a long way from sector 2101."
Kidnapped
A few days later when Terry came home from school, he got ambushed by his mentor as soon as he stepped foot in the mansion.
"Terry, have you seen Gabriella today?"
"Yeah, I saw her after lunch she told me that her head hurt, so I advised her to go straight home."
"Well, she hasn't been home all day. I figured that she was with you at the school since she regularly comes home with you."
"That is not normal for her, hmm I wonder if she was wearing her necklace today."
"What necklace?"
"Since we made it know that you adopted her as your heir, I asked her to a concealed bat tracker as a necklace. The story behind it was that her birth father had it made for her and it was something that was precious to her."
"So what are you waiting for?"
"I've got to get the receiver from her room."
Tracking Batgirl
"Batgirl's signal is coming from this warehouse."
"Try and contact her telepathically before you jump in there."
'Gabriella, can you hear me" all Terry could hear in his mind was static. He decides to make his way toward the top of the building. He slips inside and sees" Gabriella strapped against the wall with something on her head.
"Augh" yelled Batman and the last thing he heard was Gabriella screaming
"No, Batman" When Terry finally woke up, he finds himself strapped in the same way as Gabriella is.
"Finally, you're awake just in time too. To see me destroy your friend here." The kidnapper cooed near Batman's ear.
"No, if you let her go I'll be your hamster."
"A fair deal, but she's going to have to watch as I kill you very slowly."
"No, don't take him I'll be okay I only ask one thing that you allow Batman to go free and take me back home to my father."
"Deal."
"No, Gabriella your father wouldn't like you were doing this, and he would like me less for allowing you to do it."
"He has no say in this for he has no clue how I work." Terry watched in absolute horror, as he wallowed in helplessness, as Gabriella walked to her death. As soon as Gabriella's torture started, it wasn't long before Terry closed her eyes and listened to his friends dying screams.
Within the moment the kidnapper whispered in Terry's ear very happily. "She's dead you can take her home." Terry grabbed his friend and tears slipped down his face behind his masks.
"Oh Gabriella Why"
Alone in the Batcave
"Terry, it's okay she'll be back." Mind Dancer
"No she won't she's dead I watched her die." Terry tries to explain in-between crying spells
"Terry, Gabriella's mother and I are mind stones and being one we can die once in sacrifice for someone else and rise again as a new being. Mind Dancer tried to explain it to Terry. "Once her body has phased out of this realm you must go to the place where she was killed."
"So, after that happens she will come back," Terry spoke in a hopeful tone.
"No, maybes about it that she will come back" Mind Dancer immediately confirms Terry's hopes.
Abandoned Warehouse
Batman arrives carrying a golden tiara, what was left of Gabriella when she left this world. All of a sudden he tiara began to become white hot; Batman lets go of it immediately expecting it to fall to the ground. However, to his surprise, it rose higher and higher until it stops and from it comes beams of light like shining stars forming and shaping something beneath the tiara shining brighter and brighter with every turn and twist. Soon, a mass of light stopped and slowly untwisted as it descended to the ground as it did the light it gave diminished.
"Hey, Terry did you miss me," Gabriella said laughing.
"You don't know how bad."
