Broken Family.
Disclaimer: I don't own Treasure Planet. Disney does©. Based on the novel Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Sarah Hawkins knew something was wrong. She sensed it from the moment she woke up that morning. Her husband, Leland, had been acting very strange lately.
Leland Hawkins was what you might call the strong silent type. He wasn't a man who openly showed his emotions. This had kind of created a rift between him, Sarah and their eight-year-old son, Jim. It was a wonder Leland even knew he had a wife and a son, what with him being away on business trips so often. He always came back in the end though. That made Sarah and Jim happy.
But things were different this time. Sarah had a feeling that she'd never see her husband again. Leland came downstairs. He headed straight for the door. His hand was on the doorknob. He was about to turn it, when a hand clasped onto his.
Leland turned around. Sarah was standing there. Tears were in her eyes, and she was trembling.
"Where are you going?" she asked in the bravest voice she could muster. Leland said nothing. He turned back towards the door. "Leland, I'm talking to you", called Sarah. "Answer me!" She sounded like a mother who was scolding her disobedient child.
All her efforts proved to be in vain. Leland walked out that door. He walked down to a ship that was waiting for him at the end of the dock. Then he was gone, never to return.
Sarah sat down at a table. She let her tears fall freely. Then she heard footsteps coming down the stairs. She knew right away that it was Jim.
My poor son, she thought to herself. He doesn't understand any of this. But it's sweet that he wants his father to stay. Maybe he can succeed where I failed in getting Leland to stay.
Several minutes passed. Then the door opened. Jim walked in. His face was crest-fallen. He sat down at the table next to his mother. The Hawkins family was broken. It could never be repaired.
The End.
A/N: 1.) I guess you could call this a companion piece to my poem Why? Except that was in poetry form, and told in first-person, from Jim's point-of-view. This is in prose, and told in third-person point-of-view.
2.) This story ends where one on my other Treasure Planet stories, A Scaring Situation, begins.
3.) I'm working on a story about the dad, Leland. It will be called Leaving it All Behind. Expect it to be posted within the next week or so.
