AN: This is my version of the missing Spencer/Toby fireplace scene from 2.01. Since it was stolen from us, I thought it might make us feel a little better to have something to read at least. I hope everyone enjoys it!

Firelight

"I'm sorry I scared you tonight," Toby said, his voice smooth in contrast to the crackling fire. His eyes were transfixed on his hand as Spencer laced and unlaced his fingers with hers in a sensually slow process again and again.

At his words she halted her movements, choosing instead to place her palm to his chest as she looked up to meet his gaze. "I overreacted."

They were lying together on the custom upholstered chaise lounge in her family's den, the warmth of the fire casting a cozy, romantic glow about the room. Spencer's head was resting comfortably on his shoulder with his arm encircling her waist. Though her back was to the fireplace, she could see the dancing flames reflected in his eyes, highlighting their depths as he regarded her thoughtfully.

"Spencer, you've been through hell in the last few days, and tonight someone tried to sneak into your house. You had every right to be afraid," he reassured, reflexively tightening his hold on her. "I shouldn't have done that, but I had to see that you were okay."

Her heart jumped at his words. It had been a long time since anyone had shown concern for her wellbeing. "Thank you for worrying about me."

"I've been going crazy not being able to see you."

She nodded as she tucked her head under his chin, and smiled when she felt him place a kiss against her hair. "I still can't believe my dad slammed the door in your face." The memory alone was enough to turn her grin into a scowl, but Toby just shrugged beneath her.

"He only wants what's best for you. Besides, my parents aren't exactly being supportive."

She sighed as she once again entwined their hands, admiring how well they fit together. "When did we become Romeo and Juliet?"

He laughed gently. "Wherefore art thou?"

"I think that's my line," she said with a smirk.

"It won't always be like this," he promised after a long pause. "Your parents are trying to protect you. I get it."

"They just care about how everything looks, what people will say," she argued. "If they really were protecting me, they would have listened when I told them about Ian."

He grew quiet, and Spencer felt his body tense underneath her. She raised her eyes to look at him and saw that his expression was distressed.

"Emily told me what happened that night," he explained. "I should have gone with you."

She shook her head in protest. "Toby, there was no way to know that was going to happen. I wasn't even supposed to be at the church."

He was silent as his eyes bore into hers, the flickering flames mirrored there nearly hypnotizing her. Moments passed before he finally spoke. "I don't know what I would do if anything happened to you," he told her, the intensity in his voice causing Spencer's heart to race. "I love you."

She took a sharp breath, completely blown away. Like the first time he'd kissed her outside of the motel, she had not been expecting this. But also like that first kiss, she found herself smiling in response to the completely unexpected as she replied with, "I love you, too."

He inched his head closer to her, the rest of the world fading away as their lips finally touched, soft and warm like the glimmer of firelight.
