Rain whispers on the window. A slim figure stirs under cool sheets. Sharp, worried blue eyes open. Inky black hair shocks the crisp white of the pillows. Angry, red numbers glare that it's 4:16. A heavy sigh breaks the still morning.
Legs swing over the edge of the bed. Careful feet murmur across carpet. Drawers slide open and shut and soft cotton brushes fair skin. The boy slips out the door and down wooden steps. The aging floorboards give no protest, they know to keep a secret.
Down a dark hallway, stiff muscles relax, each foot falls lighter than the last, weight eases from small shoulders. Doubtful, hopeful blue eyes fix on a promise of release. The uneven bars stand in the gym solitary, aloof. Chalk dusts hands, chokes air, and brushes wood. The boy's feet leave the ground eagerly; they have no intention of returning to gravity any time soon.
Muscles pull on tendons pull on bones. The boy twists, spins, and twirls. A sudden stop, hands hold the body aloft, vertical. A moment of tight fear, then release. Feet swing forward, fingers let go of the bar. One second, two second, three, then a soft thump reassures the emptiness that hands have caught wood and that wood has caught hands. Sweat meets tongue, bringing a small smile. The taste of a challenge. Physical acknowledgement to accomplishment. Proof to an uncertain heart.
His body flows as fluidly as time does. Hours melt away, and so does thought. The boy twists around the bar once more, then lets go. One second, two second, three. A gentle thump declares simultaneous victory and defeat. Both feet and fear plant firmly. Grounded, the boy shuffles uneasily. Heavy breaths, heavy footsteps, a heavy sigh. Heavy, chalk covered fingers run through heavy, black hair.
A heavy heartbeat in a heavy chest. The promise is broken. The rain still whispers.
A/N: I apologize if this made no sense whatsoever. It started out as something completely different (and longer) but somehow ended up like this. To me, this was Robin promising himself that his fears/doubts/worries will disappear once he's in the air, but then that promise breaks when gravity, and reality, set back in. Did it make sense? Did you see what I saw in this? Please let me know in comments if you're willing.
