A young man with tousled red hair stepped into the early morning sunlight just outside of his home in Vermillion City. Drawing his jacket tightly around his frame against the incoming sea breeze, he turned to open the door for his Psyduck, which toddled out carrying a stack of waffles, cramming them each greedily into his mouth. James reached down to grab one, but Psyduck slapped him with one of the waffles and backed up, looking as vicious as a constantly confused duck could.

"PSSSSSSSSYDUCK." He began to pummel James with waffles as he took off across the cobble-stone town square.

James sighed exasperatedly, taking off after Psyduck, the ruins of what was once a booming town surrounding him. Ever since Team Rocket had taken over, most of the people had left, if they had gotten the chance, but security had been severely tightened. His eyes swelled with tears slightly, as he slammed into the side of the town fountain, where Psyduck was currently splashing water playfully.

"Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaames! James, dear! Excuse meeee," shrieked an old lady also near the fountain, washing out some of her dishes. Her brown hair was prematurely graying, and she had put it into a bun. She approached James, wiping her grubby hands on the front of her flowered apron as she strode towards him. "I was wondering if you would do me a bit of a favor?"

James turned around, while Psyduck found his amusements in tossing pebbles at the back of James's head. "Yes, Miss Lanford, I'd feel so priveleged if you'd allow me to take your Ekans for his appointment at the doctor's AGAIN. Why, the wound from last time has nearly healed!" Sarcasm dripped from his voice as he spoke, but he mumbled apologies under his breath as he shifted uncomfortably.

Winifred Lanford flushed with embarassment as she shifted on the spot, wringing her hands on her apron as she continued, trying to ignore James's previous statement. "I need someone to pick up some books for me. They're about leadership of course, and I figure that I ought to read up on it." She straightened dignifiedly, although seeing that James's expression hadn't changed in the slightest, she hunched quite noticably and said quite huffily, "And you -will- collect them for me, won't you, James?"

James snickered under his breath, as he gazed at Psyduck, who had begun to one by one toss Mrs. Lanford's dishes into the tall grass which was often frequented by pokemon, and those seeking to catch them. Turning back to Mrs. Lanford, he nodded, now staring at a piece of paper she had shoved into his hand, regarding her order at Moister's Book Shop of Pewter City. As she stomped off in the direction of the grass, James stepped up next to Psyduck, "She's awfully confident of herself, isn't she, bud?" Psyduck nodded, and then waddled after James, who had begun to stride down the path to Diglett's Cave, on what would prove to be a much more interesting journey than he presently expected.
