My second-ever free-verse! Free-verse is FUN. However, for those of you who have read Escape It, my other free-verse, be warned: this one is not going to be as good. Why? Because Escape It took me weeks, and this only took a couple of days. Oh well, hope you enjoy.
Madrigal!
not something to be proud of
[ not in his eyes, at any rate ]
the fact of it had caused him painanguishfear
caused him to leave his sister
but when they tried to tie him down to the wrong branch
[ I'm no Janus! ]
he screamed it at the top of his lungs
Why?
perhaps it was to break the cycle.
jump off the endless treadmill
[ the reason he left the hunt in the first place ]
because on that night
the one he can't stop thinking about
when fire flared and lives were lost
all branches

stayed out of it.

[ - he thought - really it was they who suffered most ]

they didn't own him

Yep. Free-verse about Dan's Crowning Moment of Awesome, so I just had to include that last bit. When I got to that part in the book, I said something like "OWNED!" and went back to reread it, which was, incidentally, also my reaction to Page 12 of Book 5.
