Persistence

'Could I stay with you for a few days?'

House eyed Wilson's suitcase before looking back at him. 'You idiot; you told her.'

'She told me.'

House was silent.

'Things have been crappy at home lately; I figured I wasn't spending enough time with her. I figured... Turns out you're right; it's always about sex. She's been having an affair.'

They stared at each other for a few moments before House moved out of the doorway and let Wilson in.

'Want a beer?' House asked.

Wilson smiled as he picked up his suitcase and walked in. House shut the door behind him and limped back into the kitchen. He got a beer from the fridge and placed it on the kitchen counter.

'You want a sandwich?'

'No thanks; I learned long ago not to eat anything you prepare.' Wilson replied as he walked up behind House.

'I'm deeply offended by that.' He mocked.

Wilson slowly walked out of the kitchen and into the living room, beer in hand.

'So how are you about all this?'

'What staying here or that fact that my wife had an affair?'

'You had an affair as well.'

'That's not the point.'

The pair sat in silence until House slowly stood.

'Look at this.'

He grabbed his cane and padded into the kitchen. He sat on the ledge of the bay window in the corner of his kitchen and waited for Wilson to follow him.

After a few moments House became impatient and called out to him. 'Wilson! Get your butt in here.'

'Oh I'm sorry. I thought you were going to the bathroom or something.'

'Of course you did. I'd really ask you to come watch me piss.'

'Nothing would surprise me with you, House.'

House turned back to the window and Wilson gingerly sat down on the other end of the ledge.

'What am I supposed to be looking at?'

'The sky.'

'Why?'

'When I need to think, to mull things over I come hear and look out the window. Nine times out of ten, clouds cover them, but every so often you get a clear sky and it tells you something. That something good has to come out of everything. You just need to persist. Or in this case just keep checking back, waiting for there to be no clouds.'

'So basically I have to wait until either she or I want to get back together.'

House was silent.

'She did cheat on me. I know that usually it's me but that's not the point and at least she told me. Perhaps she doesn't want me back. Maybe I don't want her back.'

'That's a lie.'

'How would you know?'

'I know you Wilson.' House paused, 'Just give it time… until then you can perch here.'

'Perch?'

'I like that word.'

Wilson smiled and gently patted House's shoulder. He stood and walked back into the living room, leaving House staring up at the stars.
