Prologue
Shadow stared out to see an endless expanse of snow; a sign of endings and new beginnings. He thought of days long past with his companions: Confidence, Arrogance, Passion, Solemnity, Superstition, Persistence, and Assertion. Their paths had separated long ago though occasionally they crossed briefly. The people they once were had long gone and been replaced several times. He himself had changed, gradually fading from their minds. The past was gone, disappearing into the strands of time.
Chapter 1
Kuroko looked out onto the school grounds from the roof, eagerly observing all details and interactions. He had long accepted the futility of trying to be noticed. In all his years of life, his accumulation of friends could be counted on one hand and still have fingers left over. He interacted with others his age of course, but those were relatives; they had a distant relationship. Returning his attention to the people outside, he saw the obvious separation of clusters. There were four that stood out the most.
