Innocence Lost

It was a bright and sunny day over the city-state of Jowston. My group and I were enjoying ourselves very much, laughing amongst ourselves and the such. Ever since Jowy and I had been betrayed by Highland, our home country, it was rare that we would enjoy ourselves so much. We had decided to run an errand for Pilika, the little girl that had rescued Jowy after we jumped off the cliff to save ourselves from Captain Rowd and Prince Luca Blight's tirade. The errand was simple: go to Muse to buy a wooden amulet Pilika had wanted for her father. We had gone and bought the amulet, and we were on our way back. We were safe.

Or so we thought, until the scent of burned wood and clay tickled our nostrils. The closer we got to Pilika's home of Toto, the stronger the scent became. We paused in the entrance to the town, taking in the tragedy.

Jowy blinked and gaped for a few seconds before he managed to choke out, "Wha... what the hell...?"

I pointed at Pilika crying at the ruins of what used to be her house. She had her blood-smeared hands to her face, causing her tear-stained cheeks to take on a pink tint. THe poor girl had blood all over her... so horrible, for her to be so young and have experienced such trauma.

We all ran over to her, calling out to her. Jowy, caring as much as he did for his young savior, put his hand on her shoulder and asked in a quiet voice, "What happened, Pilika?"

Pilika could only sob in reply. My heart was being torn into a thousand pieces just watching the scene.

Jowy sighed. "What... what could have..."

Pilika paused in her broken cries to give a sob-wracked answer. "Da... da... da... daddy said 'go hide!' so Pilika hide real good... so nobody find. But Pilika hear lot of noise. Very scary noise. Very, very, very scary noise. So... so... so Pilika... Pilika take a little peek." She broke down into tears.

Jowy turned to me, a look of intense fear and sadness on his face. I could tell that his heart, too, had been wrenched from his chest and shattered.

Pilika took a few shuddering breaths, then continued in a shaking voice. "And then... and then... and then... Pilika saw Mommy and Daddy... but they not moving... covered with sticky, red stuff..." She sniffled, looking at her blood-stained hands.

So that was her parents' blood... My heart's pieces blew into a thousand more.

"Pilika... Pilika... Pilika know... Mommy and Daddy are 'dead,' right? Daddy told Pilika about it when Pilika's cat died. But... but... but it's okay. Daddy said that it not so bad to be dead. He say it just like going somewhere far, far away. Right, right? Pilika... Pilika be a good girl... Mommy... Daddy..." Once again she broke down into unstoppable tears.

Jowy bent down, wrapping his arms around the poor girl, only muffling her tears, nothing more.

A war had begun, and I would fight.

For Pilika, and all the others.

I would fight.
