This is a very quick one shot that focuses on Marco just after the events of "Cheer Up Star" so minor spoilers for that episode.
I don't own Star vs. the Forces of Evil or "Space Unicorns." Those are owned by Disney and Parry Grip, respectively.
GENERAL POV
"It's supposed to be ironic."
Marco Diaz snorted and glanced down at his phone, tucked safely into his hand and lit up to display his background, a photo of him and Star portal hopping with Ludo trailing behind them. It hadn't been the best time to take a photo, perhaps, but he didn't regret it.
The boy nearly leapt out of his skin as his ringtone went off, displaying a call from Oskar. Seeing no sign of Star around, Marco rolled his eyes in irritation and let the call go to voicemail.
It was no secret that he wasn't a fan of Oskar, especially after he had made Star feel so bad, but he had kept that from Star because he knew that she liked him.
Just for kicks, Marco pulled up his music and pressed play on "Space Unicorn" just to hear the whole thing for once instead of the shortened ringtone version.
Space unicorn, soaring through the stars. Delivering the rainbows all around the world….space unicorn, shining in the night. Smiles and hugs forever all around the world!
Marco grinned and shook his head, a blush spreading across his cheeks. Yes, the song was ironic, but not for the reason people thought.
Everyone was convinced that Marco hated Parry Gripp. And while he admittedly wasn't Marco's favorite artist, this particular song had a special place in his heart.
Up until Star had arrived from Mewni, his ringtone had been one of the preprogrammed ones that came with every phone. But when she had gotten to his house, and when he had accepted her for everything she was? He had changed it.
Because Star was literally the space unicorn in the song.
Rainbows? Smiles and hugs forever? Pure of heart, strong of mind? Marshmallow lasers?
That was literally Star Butterfly in a nutshell, and every time Marco heard that ringtone, every time she bounced up and down and sang along with it, every time he got a call….
Marco smiled brightly and shook his head, his face warm as he shoved his phone back into his pocket and began heading up the stairs to go to bed.
Well, he wouldn't mind helping her to deliver the rainbows all around the world, that was for sure. As long as she kept smiling at him like she had that night.
The song wasn't ironic because he hated it. It was ironic because he loved who it reminded him of.
Adorable one sided Starco. Yay!
Reviews would be lovely! (Also prompts hint hint)
