Killing Old Identities

Syndrome stared at the bonfire. "Syndrome" was who he was now. He refused to be addressed by anything else.
Sometimes he missed Buddy Pine. Buddy Pine had the foolish optimism that only children had. The optimism that believe your parents did you love you even though they rarely even noticed you. The optimism that the world respected character rather then respecting a threat. The optimism that believe that your hero would not reject or be cruel to you.
But optimism was stupid, so Buddy Pine had to go.
He mourned Incrediboy, who really never was. But he knew Incrediboy would have great. He would been way better then that other technology hero, Frionic(whom he was told that he resembled). Incrediboy would have definitely flew into fewer walls then Frionic. Incrediboy would have definitely been the best, most hard working, most loyal, sidekick that ever was.
It was a shame that Incrediboy never go to be.
Danny Boy was an innocent, even loving nickname given by a caring, long-dead grandfather. Danny Boy was a preteen runaway who wanted a new start. Danny Boy was once in desperate enough situation to let a stranger touch him for money. Danny Boy was stupid enough to believe that the stranger would stop at "touching".
Danny Boy was the reason Syndrome now had three scars on his arm: the first one to die, the second one because the first try didn't work, and the third vertical one when he realized that it was "down the road, not across the street."
Danny Boy was hated, so Danny Boy had to go.
Celtic Pitbull was useful. Celtic Pitbull was childishly whimsical name given to a grown-up arms dealer. Celtic Pitbull was the one who put a stop to Danny Boy's suicide attempts. Celtic Pitbull was the one who realized that the other "heroes" as well as Mr. Incredible had to die. If they had been real heroes, they wouldn't have let a thing like legislation stop their hero work. They shouldn't have let legislation keep them from preventing evil men molesting little boys.
Celtic Pitbull was the one who made connections with Mirage, and realized that Mirage deserved someone who wasn't named "Celtic Pitbull".
Celtic Pitbull was outgrown, so he had to go.
Mirage watched Syndrome put things into the bonfire by the armload.
"What are you doing?" She asked, not really expecting thorough explanation.
"Burning away parts of myself." was his only answer.
Author's notes: One of the thing that I really noticed about Syndrome is that when he takes on a new name, he abandons the old one, i.e. "My name is Incrediboy!" and "My name is not Buddy! And it's not Incrediboy either, that ship has sailed...I'm Syndrome, your nemesis!"
