I rubbed my throbbing temples and winced. None moon days seem to come around a lot faster than full moons; even if I do say so myself. Jeez! Where was Maddy today?
"Hey, Welshie!" Jimmi yelled from the football field. "Comin'?"
"What?" I mouthed, giving him a wierd look.
"Football practice?" He gestured for me to come over. Right now? Fat chance.
I shook my head, "nah, I think I'll pass today thanks!" Jimmi shrugged and joined Tom, Luke, David and the others.
"Bye mam, I gotta go meet Rhydian!" I heard Maddy say, in the car park. Might as well eavesdrop a little.
"Don't forget to invite him to dinner tonight." Emma reminded as Maddy sighed.
"It's embarrassing. Anyways, i'm not feeling too good. Can't I just go back to bed?" She whined. I smiled a little to myself, trying to ditch school, again.
"You'll be fine." She yawned.
"Easy for you to say! You'll just go back to bed when you get in!" I heard an exagerated sigh and he car door slam shut. Seconds later Mrs S drove away.
I met Maddy halfway, outside the gymnasium. Damn, she looked how I felt; dead. Chalk white with light traces of purple under her eyes. It was like looking in the mirror.
"Hey." She groaned, her expression grim. Maddy slung her bag on the floor and joined me on the wall. "I feel like I'm about to explode."
"Tell me about it." I turned to face her, but something took me by surprise. Her cheeks were flushed pink and her heartbeat had sped up a little.
"Erm, Rhydian?" She breathed awkwardly.
I took guilty pleasure in her awkwardness. The two times she'd asked me to come for dinner, you'd think she'd just get over it. I played along; for the fun of it. "Yeah Mads?"
"My mam…and you totally don't have to agree of course…but…well…we're having ribs tonight and…she just wanted to know…this is really embarrassing but…" She mumbled.
I laughed inside. "Spit it out" I smirked.
"Uh yeah…"
Feeling bad, I let her off the hook. "Yeah okay, cool, I'd love to eat at your house tonight! And for the record I know your mom made you…"
Her eyes went wide. "How did you…?" Maddy stopped and then gasped. "I'm going to kill Rhydian Morris! Were you eavesdropping…again? That was embarrassing!" She shoved me weakly, attempting to steady her breathing.
I bit back a sarcastic comment, as I rubbed my temples. None moon day. I almost forgot.
"This'll be the second time this week! And it's only Wednesday!" She whined clutching her stomach. "Oh god! I feel like I'm gonna be sick."
I felt exactly the same. Maybe less excitement would get me through the day. "Maddy, just breathe." I ordered.
"What do you think i'm doing now?"
"Whining, complaining, the usual."
"Rhydian! Not now!" She was pissed, from the the lack of presence of the moon; I could read her like a book. That's what I loved about her; along with everything else.
"Aw Mads, I'm sorry." Guilt welled up in the pit of my stomach. I always pushed her too far.
"I don't have the energy to fight with you Ryhdian; not now. Plus, I don't want to. C'mon we need to go to form." She paused. "Ugh, Jefferies."
Okay, now I seriously hate none moon days…
