What if Scarlett had told Rhett about Katie Colum O'Hara after she gives birth to her?
Scarlett quickly gets off of Shiloh with Kitty Cat in tow and Father Colum tailing behind her.
"Colum, I don't think this a good idea. I just don't feel it's safe," Scarlett replies in a nervous manner.
"Scarlett, I'm speaking not as your priest, but as your cousin, and I'm telling you that Rhett has a right to know. Besides the next ship for Ireland won't be coming in another week or so," Colum chuckles.
"I suppose you're right Colum. I just don't want to ruin the newlywed's fun," she smiles.
Scarlett knocks on Captain Butler's front door. Annie Hampton Butler opens the door.
"Why, hello Scarlett. What a surprise to see you here . . . um . . . how are you?" she asks nervously.
"Oh, I'm fine," Scarlett replies as she tucks Cat more into her shawl, "I've just come to see Rhett and show him something. Oh, by the way, this is my cousin Colum O'Hara."
"Hello, lassie," Colum answers.
"Hello, why don't you come inside? Rhett darling, you have visitors."
The three of them walk into the parlor.
"Oh Scarlett, what a pleasant surprise and whom is that with you," Rhett says with a mocking smile, sitting down in his favorite chair.
"This is my cousin Colum O'Hara."
"Hello, Captain Butler. A pleasure to meet you," Colum answers.
"Likewise," Rhett responds.
Then, Rhett notices something, something in Scarlett's shawl.
"Anne darling, weren't you going to have lunch with Mrs. Butler? Don't worry, I can take it from here."
"Alright, Rhett. I'll see you later, sweetheart," Anne comes over and kisses Rhett on the cheek, "See you this evening. Bye Scarlett. Colum, it was nice meeting you," Annie walks out the door on her way to Eleanor Butler's house.
"So Scarlett, what's this all about? What's that in your arms? It almost seems like you're holding a . . ." Rhett breaks off and looks up at Scarlett.
"Yes Rhett, it's your baby. Her name is Katie Colum O'Hara"
"I don't believe it."
Well, come look at her, then."
Rhett gets up out of his chair and comes over to where Scarlett is standing. Cat had just woken up. Her beautiful green eyes meet Rhett's dark coals for eyes.
"Oh, my God! When . . . how did this happen?" Rhett says, putting his finger in Cat's hand.
"Oh well, you remember when we went sailing. Well, here she is."
"When did you find out?"
Well, after I left Charleston, I went to Savannah, and I met the O'Hara's. I found out on my way to Ireland. Isn't she just a darling Rhett?"
"So, you've come to dump her on me. Very well Scarlett. I'll keep her. It obvious you would be an unfit mother."
"What are you talking about, Rhett? She's my baby. I'm keeping her!"
"Come now, Scarlett. Stop making this difficult. Just give me Katie and you'll have your freedom."
"Rhett Butler!" You are not taking Cat away from me like you did Bonnie! I just came to tell you about your child. That is all. Goodbye Captain Butler."
"Come on Colum. I told you this was a bad idea."
"Scarlett, you can't be serious. You wouldn't know how to love a child. Not how she's supposed to be loved."
"Rhett, if you want to see Cat while she's in America, we'll be staying in Savannah with the O'Hara's. Goodbye, Rhett. Oh and Rhett, if you ever think you can take Cat away from me, well, you get my point."
"Fine, Scarlett. I don't want to embarrass you in front of your cousin. I'll let you be, but I will be visiting regularly. Here and in Ireland. Now, if I see you mistreat that child just once, I might just take Cat away. I'm sure Annie would be pleased."
"Goodbye Rhett."
"Nice meeting you Captain Butler."
"Goodbye Scarlett. It was nice meeting you Colum. Goodbye my little girl," Rhett says while stroking one of Cat's legs and kisses her goodbye.
Scarlett and Colum both walk out the door.
