"You are all here because the League requires a service of you. As you can see, there are a fair few of you missing."
The Champions who were present began to look around. There were indeed several Champions missing from the emergency meeting they had all just been summoned to.
The leader of the League Council continued to address them, his voice becoming weaker as he continued. "What you may call a mutiny appears to have taken place."
This statement was followed my several gasps and lots of muttering.
"What does this have to do with us?" sneered Katarina from the back of the grand hall.
"You are all aware of the wars that have taken place in the past. I daresay many of you lost friends and family during those times. It appears that those who have seceded from the League are trying to take over."
"They don't stand a chance. What are you so afraid of?" shouted Katarina angrily. These elders were clearly wasting her time.
"Woe betide the day when Cho'Gath grows weary of the League."
Everyone in the room looked around to find the source of what they'd just heard. After a few moments, everyone's eyes fell on Professor Heimerdinger.
"How…?" started the councilman.
"Based on the brief roll call I just conducted, it appears the majority of the champions who are missing have the tendency to be…well…evil."
"Then what's Katarina doing here?" muttered Garen.
Katarina lunged forward, but Talon was there to hold her back.
"But what does this have to do with Cho'Gath?" Lux asked hastily as she elbowed her brother.
"Is he behind this?" asked Ashe in her clear, calm voice.
The councilman looked around the room grimly and said, "It appears so."
More anxious muttering consumed the hall, but it halted at the sound of Cassiopeia's hissing voice. "But Kat'sss right. Let them ssseparate if they want to. I fear none of them, not even the likesss of Cho'Gath."
There were a few nods and murmurs of agreement, but many other Champions looked unsure.
"You fail to understand just how grave this situation is!" the councilman shouted. He glared around at the room, which had dissolved to silence once again.
"Cho'Gath wishes to bring The Voidborn upon us."
Katarina, who finally looked slightly frightened, said, "It's not possible."
"Cho'Gath has found a way to create a hole between our dimensions. He will carve the way for his brothers to finally unite with him here, and together they will wreak havoc beyond anything you could possibly imagine," the councilman said, fear causing his voice to shake, "We must stop him before it is too late. If he opens a portal of any kind, the world as we know it is doomed."
The silence was loud in the hall as the Champions realized the challenge that was before them.
"How do you know all of this?" It was Caitlyn who'd spoken up this time. Her eyes were narrowed at the councilman as she pieced it all together herself.
"We have planted a spy within the group that has seceded," answered the councilman.
Caitlyn nodded and asked, "Who?"
The councilman turned his head slightly to the right of the large group of Champions, and someone stepped forward.
Caitlyn gasped, and she heard her comrade Vi shout, "Oh, you've got to be kidding me!"
Vi lunged forward, her giant hextec fists at the ready, but the councilman looked at Caitlyn and shouted, "Stop her, now!"
Acting instinctively, Caitlyn pulled a gun out of her holster and shot at Vi. Instead of a bullet, a large net sprung from the gun and forced Vi to the ground. The force of the net had flung Caitlyn back several feet, but she raced forward and shouted angrily at the councilman.
"That will not hold her long, and I will not do it again. Councilman, you must understand who this is. She cannot be trusted." Caitlyn was pointing to the Champion who had stepped forward.
She was tiny. Her long, blue hair was as wild as ever, her unsettling eyes were wide, and her smile was as maniacal as Caitlyn remembered it. It had been a long time since she'd seen it in the flesh.
"I understand the crimes Jinx has committed in the town of Piltover, and I do not condone them. However, she is doing the League a service, and I ask that you postpone any correctional action until we stop Cho'Gath," said the councilman sternly.
"If you can catch me," jeered Jinx, winking at Caitlyn.
Caitlyn narrowed her eyes at Jinx as Vi ripped the net off herself and shouted, "How can you trust that freak? How do you know she's not going to double-cross you? Listen, I've chased her for years, I know what she's like – "
"I can assure you that she can be trusted. We councilmen are not idiots, you see. All appropriate measures to ensure Jinx's trust have been taken. Besides, she does not want the world to end anymore than you do."
"Yeah, I'm not done having fun with you yet!" laughed Jinx.
Vi started towards her again, fuming, but Caitlyn held out an arm to stop her. She did not look away from Jinx as she spoke.
"One step out of line, and we annihilate her. Is that understood?"
Jinx's playful smile turned into a determined smirk as Caitlyn spoke.
"Jinx, does that sound fair to you?" asked the councilman.
Jinx took a step toward Caitlyn and Vi. She held out her hand and said, "A deal's a deal."
Caitlyn slowly took Jinx's hand and shook it. She then looked at Vi, who very reluctantly did the same. She looked as if she might vomit as her hand touched Jinx's.
"Very good. Now, we have very little time. Champions, you must get organized. Cho'Gath and his forces were last spotted in the rift. Jinx has not been able to pinpoint how or where Cho'Gath plans to open a gate to The Void, but we're quite certain he's kept that information to himself. She has, however, been able to locate several camps within the rift."
The Champions were all listening intently. Even Vi had stopped seething about Jinx.
"I know I do not have to remind you of how vast and dangerous the rift is. You will have to divide into many groups, and each should have a leader. I expect to hear from each group within the hour. You will be briefed on the camp you will attack, and then you will leave immediately," the councilman had hardly finished when Garen spoke up.
"Sir, I request that Lady Luxanna be granted permission to stay here."
"What?!" shouted Lux.
"She is with child."
Several people gasped, and someone said, "Nice, Ezreal!"
"If she is with child, then she is most definitely permitted to st – "
"Hold on!" shouted Lux, cutting off the councilman, "First of all, whoever said that, uh, ew. Ezreal is like, my brother, and that's a ridiculous level of gross."
Lux turned to face the many Champions behind her, but no one fessed up. Ezreal's face was bright red.
"Second, I am most definitely not with child," Lux turned to face her brother, "I will decide my own fate, thank you very much."
Garen glared down at his sister. The councilman watched them for a moment before he spoke.
"Garen, you have done extraordinary things for the League. If you would like your sister to stay, she may," he said softly.
"Yeah, poor baby Lux should stay home. The rift can be a little dark, it might be too scary!" taunted Katarina from the back of the group.
Lux did not turn to face Katarina, but a nasty scowl had appeared on her face. She began to glow slightly, and her hair started to float around her.
"Control," Garen muttered.
Lux took a deep breath and the light around her dimmed slightly. "I will be leaving with the rest of the Champions. I wish to get this over with as soon as possible, so I can attend to other matters." She finally turned to glare at Katarina, who only laughed.
The Champions began to disperse into groups, and Garen muttered to Lux, "Do not pick a fight with Katarina. Your strength is no match for hers."
"It's not all about strength, brother," said Lux angrily.
She twirled her staff in her hand for something to do as Garen surveyed the room.
"Let's get Janna," said Lux.
"Lux, I know she's your friend, but –"
"But what? She's incredible and you know it," said Lux defiantly.
"Fine," said Garen, rolling his eyes.
Lux walked away for a few moments and returned with Janna as well as Amumu. Garen looked down at him and started to say something, but Lux cut him off.
"Don't!" She walked closer to her brother and whispered, "He's so sad. No one else wanted him. We have to take him."
Garen looked from his sister to Amumu and resigned. He looked desperately around the room one more, but was interrupted by someone tapping on his shoulder. He turned to see a woman with flowing, bright red hair standing before him.
"Hi there," she said.
"Hello, Miss Fortune," replied Garen.
"Oh, you can call me Sarah," she said with a flirtatious smile. Lux raised an eyebrow.
"You look like you could use a marksman," said Miss Fortune, gesturing to her twin pistols.
Garen stared at her blankly.
"Of course, if you won't have me, I can look elsewhere," she said as she began looking around the room again.
"Oh, no, of course not! Yes, please join us," said Garen, clearing his throat.
"Great," said Fortune with a smile at the group.
Lux and Janna gave her small smiles in return, and Amumu just continued to sob.
