Over the last few years, Cho Hakkai has had to make a number of adjustments. The first was coming to terms with the fact he was no longer human. Suddenly finding oneself a member of an entirely different species is quite a shock. He hold himself that the more he got used to being a youkai, the more he'd take his power limiters off. Which is why, of course, he almost never does.
There are also a number of sensory adjustments he has had to make as a result of the first. One night after first awakening at Gojyo's house he realized that he was being kept awake by the sounds of mice scurrying in the kitchen down the hall. This thought was immediately followed by wondering what kind of sorry state the man's kitchen must be in to have attracted mice. An adjustment to having perfect vision, eyes seeing more clearly than they ever had, soon gave way to adjusting to having his field of vision cut in half. Learning to compensate for lack of depth perception was difficult. Misjudged distances left him looking uncharacteristically clumsy until he managed it.
The journey west he is currently a part of has also necessitated a number of adjustments. Like remember that with the unlimited funds of a divine credit card at his disposal he need not be as thrifty as he normally would (and if the rest of the party insists on calling him a cheapskate for it, they are more than welcome to start shopping for themselves). There are also the tensions that inevitably arise when four men are forced to spend extended periods of time in close proximity to each other. He tries to diffuse them as best he can and manages to succeed most of the time. He also worries about what kind of carnage would occur if the other three did not have him there to keep the peace.
There are also other, more personal, adjustments he is making. Once he awoke in the morning to smiles and kisses from a girl with green eyes and long, light blonde hair. When she was cruelly taken from him, he thought that he would never get used to her absence in his life. But humans (and youkai) are adaptable creatures and eventually that adjustment was made, too.
And then there are the adjustments that he is still making. After so long having a bed to himself, he finds he needs to get used to sharing one again. Waking to the blond's (short and golden, not long and light) frowns and half asleep glares still throw him off a bit, though it never shows. Eyes (violet instead of green) give him a look of mild annoyance and he thinks perhaps he should not smile quite so brightly first thing in the morning. Another adjustment he can and will make to make his life easier.
He knows that things will not stay the way they are now forever. When the changes life inevitably brings come his way, he will make adjustments to accommodate them. And as he has done in the past, he will continue to do so in the future.
Notes: Originally written for Rin as a gift for the 38/83 community's Secret Santa Project. This version has been tweaked slightly from what I originally submitted. This is the first fanfic that I've ever finished and posted publically, so I'd greatly appreciate if you'd tell me what, if anything, I could do to make improvments. Please? I crave concrit like Goku craves his next meal.
