Author's note: I don't own Severus Snape or Lucius Malfoy, although I
really wish I did. The writing and slashy goodness comes from me, but the
characters? They belong to the wondrous, idol-worthy JK Rowling (all rights
reserved).
So, this is a look at Lucius over the years, and his relationship with Severus. Short with doom, angst and SLASH. Dedicated to the Shrieking Shack people on LJ. R&R please!
YEARS
When he was sixteen and going out with Narcissa for the first time, Lucius had thought himself in love. His parents had convinced him of the idea more than anything, and he thrived on the attention they received. Secretly, he thought they looked too alike, and he preferred to have the spotlight to himself.
Later, when he'd thought himself over her, he learned to love his best friend. For whatever reason, Severus and Lucius were brought together, and it went far beyond mere friendship. In future years, Lucius would deny all knowledge that they were anything other than acquaintances. Severus had betrayed him, betrayed the cause, and walked away from him. It hurt, and he let it build up.
Lucius loved once in his life. Everything else was brutally compared and cast aside. What he had for Severus was intense, passionate, fiery, all consuming. He hid it well, except when they were together.
Lucius never meant to hit Narcissa, but his temper got the better of him. When he was seventeen, she broke up with him for that reason. He promised never to hurt Severus. Physically, he never did. Lucius might not have been many things, but he was a man of his word. For Severus cheating on him, he broke Adrian's nose. For them kissing later, he held Severus close and learnt more about his broken lover. He had promised him Always, and he meant to keep to that.
Lucius never meant to hit Draco, but he was too perfect, too blond, too much that Severus was not. Too often his trysts with his lover left him with a bitter taste, and he couldn't keep it inside. He didn't do it often, but as a man Lucius became someone not to be crossed - Narcissa has learned that long ago, and Draco would learn to know when Daddy was angry.
In future years, when asked if he had any regrets, Lucius would laugh disdainfully. Malfoys don't regret, he would say. But that wasn't the truth, not really. Perhaps he had everything - beautiful wife, house, perfect child, power - but perhaps it was all a carefully crafted lie. His life was bitter, distrustful, and full of regret, if he was honest. Lucius Malfoy was never honest with himself anymore.
