One song, one dance was all I wanted. It had taken me forever to simply work up the never to ask. Not her cause I knew she'd say yes but it was that brother of hers that I was concerned about. Swiss doesn't exactly like anyone, he stands me but when I walked slowly over after the last meeting I saw daggers in his eyes. Especially when I brought up the dance that was coming up in one of my towns and the fact that I wanted Lily to come with me, really I had prepared myself for every excuse under the book.
"Please?" I begged as I kept my eyes on his pistol. "I promise one dance..." I said with a smile, "I'll treat her like a lady."
His hand went up as he stuck the gun right in my chest, "You better." Honestly if we were alone he probably would have pulled that trigger but I got my chance.
So a few days later I pulled up to the hotel and walked her to my car. As I did I noticed that every curtain in each room opened slightly before I drove off. I knew instantly in my stomach that they were all keeping a eye out and while most would probably show up at the dance it wasn't where we were going.
"Where are we going Alfred?" She asked slightly concerned when we pulled off onto an old back road.
What I wanted to say was I'd probably be going to be dead when Swiss found out about what I had planned but I thought better of it, "Well it's so nice out I thought we could have our own private…dance. Away from everyone."
"Oh?" She said with a slight glee in her sparking eyes.
"We can still turn around if you'd rather…"
"No." She said softly as my heart pounded harder. "I trust you." I just smiled in return as we rounded the last group of trees and I heard her gasp at the sight.
My smile widened at my little project, it had taken me nearly all day to finish but with the dozens of glittering lights hanging quietly from the pine branches it looked like our own personal sea of stars. "Surprise." I said as I opened my door as the music started to sing down from the branches above.
"Well," I opened her car door and reached out my hand, "May I have this dance?"
Liechtenstein just took my hand and squeezed it tightly as I lead her to the middle of our private dance floor. It was a slow song so while she blushed softly I just swung her around, "Just let me lead."
She took my hand as she started to sway with me, "Alfred, you know he…"
"I don't care if he does kill me." I answered as she just stared up at me with her doe eyes, "Because I think a princess like you deserves one day out of the castle…every once in a while don't you think?"
Her cheeks grew redder for a moment, "I…" Finally she nodded, "Yeah."
As the song was coming to an end I leaned down, "May I dip you? I promise I won't let you fall."
"I know you wouldn't." She answered as I gently leaned her back before stealing a small kiss. It was our first dance and knowing my luck probably our last but I hoped that as I dropped her off later that night that she would find that prince that she deserves. One day I hoped it would be me but until then I'll just wait with that simple song playing over and over in my head.
Slowly I drove off as a familiar song started to play on the radio I chuckled warmly; it would be our song even if no one else would know…we would.
