What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.
Wasteland – T.S. Eliot – Verses 19 – 30
Chapter 1: Is anyone listening?
For thousand years, humanity has sought answers to their questions in the stars. In a time before time, when organized religion had yet to appear on the face of the land, all eyes turned up, trying to find meaning to their existence in the movement of those shiny dots that seemed to move on their own accord over their heads.
Religion and myth came, trying to give them answers. Eyes were still looking up and humans started giving names to the groups which illuminated the dark velour cover of the night, using their amazing intelligence to name this and that according to the images their imagination could bring to existence.
Yet time passed, bringing with it rationality. Science came and stole the stars from the Gods. And today they became mere objects of the study of few who dedicated their entire lives to hear the murmurs of the universe transmitted by radio, captured by huge computer controlled antennas.
The lights of the cities obfuscated the shine of the stars, forcing people to look down, never up to the lights that shine upon us.
So the stars felt lonely and angry with the people's indifference towards them, so they chose me to bring their message.
I just wonder if anyone is willing to listen.
