Author's note: This fanfic was inspired by the song The Last Time by Taylor Swift feat. Gary Lightbody. This is my first time writing a fanfic, go easy on me. And this is just a oneshot and I may or may not write another one that relates to this and explaining their fight (if I have the time and the effort then I'll write, if not...). Enjoy!
The Last Time
"This is the last time I'm asking you this, babe. Please?"
"Wally..." Artemis drifted off, saying his name in a pleading tone with a hint of annoyance. Why can't he just leave her alone?
He was standing outside her door, while she was standing on the other side. Wally, with his big mouth, said something that should never be said to a girl like Artemis.
"I promise I'll never hurt you again. Please, give me a chance? I can't bear the thought of losing you. Please, Artemis?" he pleaded again. He had messed up, and not for the first time. There's very little chance that she's gonna let it go easily.
"Don't think that I'd forget what you said," she replied with bitterness in her tone. The words he said to her before struck a chord in her. She can handle a lot of things and words usually meant nothing to her. But this was Wally. And that made all the difference. She knew that this was not going to be easy.
"I know. I'm ju- I'm really, really sorry, Artemis. I can't explain how sorry I am. But I swear I'll make it up to you. I want there to still be an us." He stood there patiently, shifting his weight from one foot to another, waiting for her reply.
She kept her mouth shut, not entirely sure on what to say. Seeing that there was only silence on the other side of the door, Wally continued, "You know I love you, babe."
She scoffed at that. Now how many times have he said those words but still fail to prove it sometimes?
"Come on, Arty. Can we please talk about this? I really need to explain myself and apologize to you properly and I can't do that with this driftwood standing between us," he further explained.
She had to make a decision. She's fighting within herself on what to do. Her brain told her to let him go, to never accept him. But her heart still yearned for him, still held on to the memories of the past, of the happiness shared with the sweet ginger fool who was standing outside her door.
And then she remembered the little moments they shared with each other; the endless playful nicknames, the effortlessness of working together on a given mission, how they always got each other's backs, watching late-night movies in the Cave while stuffing their mouths with popcorn and see who falls asleep first, writing jokes (that only they can understand) on post-it notes on the fridge and the smacks and nudges that she gave him. She's not going to let meaningless words ruin what they had.
He heard a defeated sigh at the other end, along with the clinking and clanging of the door locks. The door opened slightly, revealing a girl with long, golden locks with her head bowed. Then, she slowly looked up, locking her cloudy grey eyes with his emerald ones. Her eyes were red though he didn't see any tears.
They just looked at each other, unspoken words passed between them. He's giving her a look of begging, sorrow and an eagerness to be forgiven. She put on a straight face, hiding her emotions which made her appear bored and even annoyed.
Hesitantly, she stepped aside and widened the door to let him in. He smiled widely and let out a small breath of relief. He walked inside, passing by her and she closed the door behind him.
