Speak

It was late at night in Ylisstol, several years after the fell dragon had been killed and the Grandmaster returned. The Halidom was at a lasting peace for the first time in 2 generations.

In a scarcely used section of the castle, a small, but very well-known family resided. Kain had become a legend after slaying Grima. His return to the capital hadn't been advertised, but people still cheered when he passed through the front gate.

However, no one had been happier than his wife. Olivia had broken down into tears as Kain retuned. Since that day, the couple had been almost inseparable and, two years later, Inigo was born.

The two year old quietly opened to door to his room, entering the one that belonged to his parents. In the dim light, he could make out the sleeping form of his mother, but the other side of the bed was undisturbed and empty.

Being as quiet as he could, he made his way to the door into the hall. Taking a look down the corridor, he saw a dim light around the edge off another door and made his way towards it.

Inigo reached the door and gave it a light push, revealing the room beyond.

In the center of the room was a table completely covered in papers, long rolls of parchment and the remains of candles, the only remaining full candle remaining lit, and seated at this mess, was the man Inigo was looking for.

Kain was working late, not an uncommon occurrence. He was going over a proposed change in law that one noble had brought forward and was finding it highly irritating. He was so caught up in his work that he didn't hear the door open or notice the tiny figure that crept up on him until he felt tiny arms wrap around his leg.

Looking down, the Grandmaster met his son's eye. Kain's irritated expression melted into a smile as he reached down and lifted the boy into his lap.

"What are you doing up, Inigo?" he asked quietly.

Inigo didn't answer, just reached up and wrapped his arms around his father's neck. Kain returned to hug, holding his son close.

Inigo always felt safe in his father's arms. He felt like nothing could hurt him and that no matter what, he would be alright.

For the first time since he was born, Inigo's childish voice spoke a single word.

"Daddy."

Kain pulled away, startled as he looked into his son's eyes before his smile grew wider.

"Yes, I am your daddy. And I will always be here for you."

Inigo didn't recognize the words, but the tone offered him great comfort as he leaned against his father's chest, his hands gripping his familiar cloak.

Kain smiled as he son's eyes closed and the toddler drifted off to sleep. As he watched, he felt his own eyes grow heavy and soon, he too was asleep.

The next morning

Olivia woke up to find herself alone in bed, the sheets beside her still undisturbed. She sighed, knowing Kain had probably worked all night again. Getting up, she noticed the open door to Inigo's small room. Entering, she was greeted with the sight of an empty bed.

The worried mother promptly turned and ran for her husband's office, not bothering to change out of her nightgown.

Opening to door, she was pleasantly surprised by the sight that greeted her.

Kain was laying back in her chair, sound asleep with Inigo also asleep against his chest, his tiny fists clenched around his father's cloak.

Breathing out a sigh of relief, the dancer smiled and quietly closed the door, deciding to let her boys sleep.

A/N: So, here's a new one-shot. In case anyone was wondering, yes this is the same Kain as in A Secret Romance.

Also, to anyone who faved/followed The Rebellion, I am very annoyed with you. I started that fic with absolutely no intuition of finishing it, but now that I know people like it, I have to continue it. So, thank you all very much! (Really, thank you.)
