Big Blue Goes to Heaven
~oOo~
Stephanie's POV
I sat on the gourney in the Emergency Room and cried. It had been a very long day. A particularly mean skip had stolen my car—with me in it, no less—and had taken us for a joyride while trying to outrun the cops. So to start off the day, I was basically held hostage while running from the police. I'd been driving Big Blue today, so no matter what happened, it was like the car was indestructible.
He'd crashed us into the Tasty Patry, and we'd driven off with donuts hanging everywhere on the car. Eventually, he'd started to drive us right into a gas station, so when I'd felt the car starting to slow, I'd jumped out. It was a good thing I had, because the idiot had hit the pump, and suddenly, Big Blue wasn't so indestructible.
The car had exploded with the gas pump, sending a fireball skyward that caught several trees in the area on fire. The fire had jumped from the trees to the nearby buildings, quickly engulfing them in flames. One of the buildings that had been heavily damaged was, to my mother's immense displeasure, the tampon factory. It wasn't a complete loss, but it would be a while until it was up and running again.
So there I'd been, on my ass in the gas station parking lot. Ranger had raced in and swooped me up, just in time to move me far enough away when the explosion happened. He'd rushed me to the ER to make sure I hadn't hurt anything too badly during the crash at the Tasty Pastry or during my leap from the car that had saved my life.
A few hours later, we were finally ready to leave.
"Babe, there are reporters at every entrance. Hundreds of people are camped outside to see you. I just wanted you to be prepared."
I groaned. I so did not want to face them right now.
"Ranger? What are we going to do? How are we going to get out of here?" I knew I sounded like I was whining, and really...I was. But at that moment, I didn't care.
"Just keep your head down, Babe. Don't try to answer any questions. The best way out is always through, so just duck your head and don't make a sound. I've got you."
Right then, I knew I believed him. Ranger would always have my back. I felt him pull me close, so I kept my head down. We opened the door and made our way through the crowd to the waiting RangeMan truck.
