Disclaimer: I do not own Fairy Tail.
I briskly walked onto Fairy Tail High's campus, the chilly wind of autumn breezing past me. It was the beginning of our second year at the prestigious school, and I felt anxious at walking in the first day alone. Luckily, it did not take long for me to find one of my best friends standing outside the school board, finding their class placement. Feeling energized at seeing her, I quickly ran up to the focused girl and tackled her to the ground, resulting in her yelp.
"Erza! Good morning!" I smiled widely, unaware at the odd looks others around are giving us. The girl underneath me, Erza Scarlet, sighed with relief when realizing that it was just her friend, who posed no threat.
"Good morning. Lucy, how many times have I told you that sneaking up on me early in the morning is not the best idea?" Though the redhead couldn't help but smile at her blonde companion, whose uniform and hair were now a sight to behold. "Come on, let's get you up and most importantly, make sure you're adhering to the dress code."
Ah, here it was. Ezra Scarlet was famous, or rather infamous, for being the most ruthless student council president in all of Fairy Tail High's existence. Constantly on the lookout for students who are breaking the rules, Erza made sure to always carry her student handbook around in case she needed to put someone in their place. She picked herself back up and smoothing her silky red hair, her deep brown eyes twinkled with her usual determination. She gingerly held out a hand, me grabbing it and letting her pull me up and secure me on my feet. She made quick work of brushing off the dust on my uniform and reattaching my necktie before glancing me over once more and giving a satisfied nod.
"Have you found what class you're in yet?" I asked innocently, ignoring the fact that I was the one who had interrupted her in the process.
"Yes. I am in class 2A, but sadly I did not see your name. Levy is with me however. I was busy looking for you and the others' names before you decided to pounce me like a maniac." Though Erza had an annoyed look on her face, I knew that underneath she was glad to see me. I had been away on business trips with my father during the last month of summer, during which he had taken away all electronics in order to have me "focus on more important things". Just thinking about it made me scoff. Ever since mom died when I was young, father was set on preparing me for the business world as heir to his company- something that he believed didn't require friends as a means to success. I forced myself to shake the thought from my head, wanting to have a good first day.
I swung my body over to look at the board in an effort to return to the conversation, which resulted in me running face first into someone's chest. Stepping back as quickly as possible to apologize for being clumsy, I made eye contact with the one and only Laxus Dreyar. A third-year student, and a known delinquent, I assume that most people would be scared speechless at the situation, but instead I felt relief. I had known Laxus since middle school and had a feeling that deep down, he wasn't as threatening as he tried to look.
"Oh, it's just you, thank god. I'm sorry I ran into you, I was being dumb and wasn't paying attention." I rubbed the back of my neck sheepishly, feeling the heat creep up to my cheeks at the embarrassing situation. I studied him for a bit, his blonde hair spiked up as usually, and his notorious scar running across his eye. I had heard girls call it scary before, but it oddly reminded me of lighting. I thought he looked good with it.
"Hn. It's fine blondie, just watch out next time." It took him a few seconds to respond, and after he did he reached out towards me. I flinched slightly, only to feel him pull something out of my hair. As I watched his hand retreat from the top of my head, which revealed a leaf that Erza had missed when helping me clean up. Feeling my face heat up even more, I snatched the leaf from his hand and threw it pathetically behind me.
Laughing nervously, I thanked him. "If it wasn't for you I probably wouldn't have noticed and had it there all day. Thanks!" I gave him a smile as he continued to stare at me before promptly turning around and heading into the school.
Erza, having watched the whole exchange, was quick to comment on Laxus' calm behavior. "That's odd, I've never really seen Laxus forgive someone so quickly. I wonder what the headmaster would think." The headmaster of the school was Laxus' grandfather, Makarov Dreyar, and also his guardian. Nobody is really sure why Laxus doesn't live with his parents, but nobody has dared to ask. I just shrugged it off before returning to the board. Scanning it quickly, I found myself grinning when I saw I was in 2B along with Lisanna Strauss, one of my other closest friends. At least I wasn't alone, and we could always meet up with Erza and Levy during lunch.
"Do you know what classes Mirajane and Cana are in?" Mirajane Strauss, Lisanna's older sister, and Cana Alberona were the two girls in our group who were older. I met Cana through Erza when we were younger, who knew Mirajane whilst I knew Lisanna. Over time, we all became good friends with each other, including Levy McGarden, who has been my best friend since I can remember.
"Speaking of the devil, here they come now." Erza's voice joggled me out of my thoughts and I looked over to see Mira, Lisanna, and Cana heading towards us. I let out a squeal the moment Lisanna made eye contact with me, causing her to run over before engulfing me in a tight hug.
"Lucy! It's been so long! Oh my gosh, your hair has grown so long it's almost to your butt! And did you grow taller? Oh my gosh you totally did! I missed you so much!" Lisanna was a whirlwind when excited, and I could only laugh while hugging her back.
"It's good to see you too! I also have great news- we're in the same class this year! Levy and Erza are in the one right next to us." I let out in a retreating breathe, slowing suffocating due to Lisanna's tight grip. Mirajane let out a giggle, before scolding her younger sister to let me get some air. After being released from the hug from hell, I proceeded to give both Mirajane and Cana a hug as well before turning back to Lisanna.
"That's great Lucy! We haven't been in the same class since middle school! Plus, you can help me with my English." Lisanna smirked and wiggled her eyebrows at me, causing a laugh to bubble out my throat. It was a well known fact that Levy and I, the avid lovers of reading and all things book related, were the best at English in our small group. I gave Lisanna a reassuring nod signaling that I agreed to help, before Erza cut in.
"Girls, I think it best we hurry so we are not late on the first day. Cana- I'm talking to you specifically." Erza gave a knowing side eye to the girl, who we all knew was well on her way to being drunk by second period. To say that Cana has a drinking problem would be a huge understatement, and yet she has somehow managed to avoid getting caught by any teachers. How she does it we have no idea, but we all have accepted by this point that there is no stopping her when it comes to alcohol.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, Erza, I know. I will make sure to stay sober until I make it to the classroom." Erza was not at all happy with her response, but she knew it was the best she could get.
"Don't worry," Mirajane started, "I'll drop her off at her class and then head to mine." Giving Erza a relaxing smile, the tension in Erza's face slowly dissipated. We all headed into the building and walked respectively to our designated classes, promising to meet at our usual table during lunch.
Upon entering class 2B, I instantly knew that this class was going to be a handful. My attention was drawn to a loud commotion at the back of the room, where three boys were being obnoxiously loud. They were distinctive students and impossible to miss- Natsu Dragneel, Gray Fullbuster, and Sting Eucliffe. The trio were all known for their mischievous ways, constantly fighting with one another, and their divine good looks. Natsu is, from what I remember overhearing, the captain of the school's soccer team, while Gray is captain of the ice hockey team. I don't know much about Sting, only that he's really into boxing. I knew them from seeing them around last year a few times, but I've only been in a class with Natsu. He definitely is way louder than I remember, but I think it's because his friends- or maybe frenemies? - are in the class as well. I nudged Lisanna and nodded towards the boys while rolling my eyes dramatically, causing us both to giggle.
Boys. Our favorite thing to make fun of.
The longer we heard the boys argue the louder our laughs became, until we became the spectacle and I could feel eyes bore into my back. Turning around cautiously, I was met with three pairs of eyes staring straight back at me simultaneously. Feeling embarrassed for the second time this morning- God, what was up with today being so odd? - I cleared my throat before grabbing Lisanna's wrist and dragged her towards two open seats on the opposite side of the room. I claimed the one next to the window, giving me a great view of the school courtyard. Lisanna took the one right behind me, also eager for a window seat. Turning around in a flash, I attempted to strike up a conversation to forget the three boys who were still glancing over at us.
"Lisanna! How was your summer? Did you and Mirajane do anything fun?" I gave a nervous smile, trying to avoid bringing up the blatant staring that Lisanna also felt.
"It was pretty good. Mira and I went shopping a bunch and helped out at the diner as usual. Mom said if you are still interested in working there that she would love to hire you!" Mira and Lisanna's family owned the most popular diner in Magnolia, called the Astro Diner. It was space themed, and I always loved going there. I was planning on applying to work there over the summer, but that was before my father swept me away to his business endeavors.
"Of course, I'd love to! Working with you guys would be so much fun!" Grinning widely, I felt my mood spike in happiness at the thought of still being able to work there. Lisanna could tell how excited I was and grinned.
"I'll talk to her about it later tonight and get back to you on applying later. Anyways, I've been meaning to ask but… isn't it weird that Natsu and them still keep looking over at you?"
Damn it. Lisanna was too perceptive to avoid talking about it.
"Ahaha, I don't know think they're just looking at me you know! You're super cute today too." Ending with a wink I turned the focus onto her, which resulted in a blush spreading across her pale skin. It contrasted greatly with her short white hair, and Lucy wasn't lying when she said that Lisanna was cute!
"A-am I really? I put on a bit of mascara today so… but I still don't thi-" Lisanna was cut off by our homeroom teacher, Mr. Wakaba, entering the room.
"Quiet down brats! It's only the first day, no need to be that excited. I'm going to call roll soon." This gave me my chance to end the conversation, so I gave Lisanna a smile and quickly turned around to face the board. I could already tell that today was going to go on forever.
It was already third period when I started to zone out while looking out the window. The leaves on the trees in the courtyard where beginning to change colors and drift to the ground, and it was beautiful. Fall has always been my favorite season, it was not too cold and not too hot. As summer faded into winter, the bright colors and cool breeze were always relaxing to me when life got stressful. Focusing on the trees still, I saw something move off to the side that caught my interest. What could that be? It couldn't be a student, seeing as how everyone should be in class right now. I mean, who skips class on the first day of school? Maybe it's a bird?
Narrowing my eyes to get a better look, I was surprised when I saw a bright head of orange hair make its way from out under the trees. Ah, so that's who it is- Mr. Loke No-Last-Name. Fairy Tail High's notorious playboy. Only a few seconds after did he appear did a girl who I didn't know follow after him, fidgeting with her uniform and fixing her hair.
Oops. I definitely just saw something I shouldn't have.
Before I could look away, Loke turned his head and made direct eye contact with me. He then smirked and winked, and I whipped my head back forward to the teacher in embarrassment. He caught me watching them! I hope he doesn't think I saw everything. Since I was too busy with calming myself down, I hardly noticed someone next to me quietly trying to gain my attention. Feeling someone's eyes on me after some time, I looked over to see a brown-haired boy in the seat next to me handing me, or at least trying to, a worksheet.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I was daydreaming and didn't notice you calling out to me." I said quickly, hoping he wouldn't think that I was trying to ignore him. The boy gave a soft smile that I never would have caught if I didn't pay close enough attention.
"It's alright, I know you aren't a rude person." He said quietly, a tint of red on his cheeks. Do I know who this is? It took me a second to think, but then it hit me. This was Hibiki Lates! We were a part of a group project together last year in biology class, though he was shy and didn't really talk to anyone. Now I feel a little bad for forgetting him for a second.
"Thank you Hibiki, I'm glad I didn't give a bad impression." I said, resulting in him smiling slightly but then returning to him own worksheet. I looked at the worksheet below me, sighing at the fact that I had missed a portion of the notes during my daydream.
After school, I headed over with Lisanna to 2A first to find Levy and Erza. I hadn't had a chance to see Levy at all day since she disappeared during lunch, and it's been over a month since we've had a chance to talk.
"Lisanna! Hurry up, I want to see Levy as soon as possible!" I shouted energetically, stuffing my belongings in my bag with no order whatsoever. Lisanna laughed at my antics, while pointing out that I was the one running behind.
"Lu, maybe if you put things away a little tidier, we would be seeing them already." Pouting at her, I threw my bag over my shoulder before snatching her hand and speeding out of the classroom. Unbeknownst to us, three males all looked at each other and nodded their heads before heading the other direction.
Lucy had finally met up with Levy, who refused to clue in the group about her whereabouts during lunch whilst wearing a small blush. Lucy was too excited to see Levy anyways that she dismissed it without a second thought. While the girls all headed to a café together, somewhere in the school hidden away, there was an odd group of students waiting around impatiently.
Right when our meeting was about to start, Hibiki ran in looking winded.
"There you are, nice of you to join us Hibiki. Please take your seat." I said to him, relieved that everybody showed up on time. I looked around the room at who was present- Laxus Dreyar the delinquent who doesn't give a crap, Gray Fullbuster, the ice princess (and resident loser in my opinion), Sting Eucliffe the egotistical boxer, Loke the playboy, and the smartest kid in our grade Hibiki Lates. Then there's me, captain of the soccer team, the divine and handsome, perfectly awesome Natsu Dragneel.
What do all of us have in common do you ask? Well, the one and only thing that ties us together…is our slight obsession with Lucy Heartfilia.
"I hereby begin the first meeting of the Lucy Heartfilia Fan Club!"
Hey guys! This is the rewritten first chapter for Obsessed! I am older now, and I must say that looking back at my old writing is… very cringe. Which is an understatement. So, that being said, I will slowly be rewriting this story chapter by chapter, and then continuing from where I left off. I just want to say thank you to everyone who read and reviewed the old version, your support and interest in the story is what motivated me to make it even better! I love you all! - Hitomi
