Derek looked down at his phone, his finger hovering over the send button. He hit the send button and put the phone up to his ear. It rang a few times before he heard her voice on the other side.
"Hello" Cora said. It had been months since Derek had sent Cora away to South America. Since then, he had made it a habit to give her a call once a week. He had to admit, he missed his little sister but it was safer for her to be away from Beacon Hills. He didn't want any more near death experiences happening again.
"How have you been?" Derek asks.
"Fine" she answers although Derek knew from past conversations that she was lying. One of the downfalls of sending her to South America was that she was now an omega without a pack and Cora hated it. Derek wanted her to give up her werewolf half, well as much as she could, and just live like a normal teenager, although he had found that she wasn't doing a very successful job at it.
"How are things in Beacon Hills?" she asked.
"Crazy…." Derek answered with a sigh, "Allison died" he blurred out, not sure how to spread the news.
"I'm sorry" Cora said, without much feeling behind it. Derek knew Allison and Cora had never been close. Derek nodded even though he knew Cora couldn't see it.
"Listen, Isaac, he's going to France to get away. Argent is taking him. I think you should meet them there" Derek said. Derek could almost hear her considering the notion over the phone.
"France? That could be fun. Why the sudden changed feelings in where I live?" she asks. To be honest, Derek wasn't sure of the answer. He wanted his sister to be happy and he felt bad for leaving her alone even though he knew it was the right thing to do. He also felt sorry for Isaac. He was the one who had gotten Isaac into all of this and now Isaac was officially alone.
"I changed my mind, I think you would be safer with another werewolf" he replied. That was partially true but not entirely the whole reason he wanted her to go to France.
"You still think it's unsafe for me in Beacon Hills?" she asked. Derek wanted to say that it was safe for her here but he knew he couldn't. He had thought he could protect her before and she had ended up almost dead. Just like Laura had ended up dead. He could not protect anyone and it was time for him to realize it. The safest place for his sister was away from him.
"The farther the way you are from Beacon Hills, the safer" he replied. He heard her sigh through the phone. He knew this was not the answer she wanted to hear but it was the answer she needed to hear.
"Okay… I'll go to France" she said. Derek couldn't help but smile a little. This was the nicest thing he was capable of doing for his little sister.
"Tell Isaac I changed my mind about never" he said, remembering the car ride in which Isaac had asked about Cora.
"What are you talking about?" Cora asked.
"Just tell him" he replied.
"Okay, I'll tell him"
"Call me as soon as you get to France"
"I will"
"Goodbye Cora"
"Bye Derek"
Derek hung up his phone and set it on the table. He looked out the window and couldn't help but smile for the first time in what felt like forever. He felt like he was keeping his sister safe in the only way he could, by keeping her away from him. She would not get hurt again because of him. Even though he felt this way, he still didn't want her to be alone. He wanted her to be happy and to have someone to care about her like he couldn't. So in his own way, he had granted her permission to do all these things.
