When She Loved Me
She stood behind the age man, waiting for him to speak. His head bobbed with an arthritic tic and his hands shook at the same speed. Finally his mouth opened, his eyes unfocused on the sapphire sky that spread out above the sakura tree branches. She knew he knew she was there, but her paid her no acknowledgement, but he just prepared to speak, grateful for an audience.
"When somebody loved me, everything was beautiful. Every hour we spent together lives within my heart. And when she was sad, I was there to dry her tears. And when she was happy, so was I. When she loved me." His voice was soft with years of yelling and other use.
{Through the summer and the fall, we had each other that was all…}
"We would sit her under this sakura tree almost everyday. Holding each other just to be together," he continued, running a hand over the tree bark.
{Just she and I together, like it was meant to be…}
"We'd drop anything to come out here and we'd just sit. Pretend there was nothing else to worry about. The rest of the world was no bother." His hand returned to his lap. "Just her and I."
{And when she was lonely, I was there to comfort her. And I knew she loved me…}
"She came to me with every worry, every happiness, everything. And I made everything better or I'd help her celebrate or I'd just be there. She made me feel needed. She made me feel good."
{So the years went by, I stayed the same, but she began to drift away. I was left alone…}
"Then came the day she grew up. And were broke up. She needed something more. More then I could ever offer, more then my entire soul."
{Still I waited for the day, when she'd say I will always love you…}
She left. I let her. She needed time, I gave her time. She needed space, I gave her space. But I prayed she'd come back. I wished so hard."
{Lonely and forgotten, I never thought she'd look my way…}
"I gave up my dream of ever getting her back. But I never loved anyone as I did her. But I believed she'd never come back." He smiled to himself. "But she did."
{And she smiled at me and held me just like she used to do…}
"She came back. She was even more beautiful then before. And she hugged me and kissed me and I kissed her back."
{Like she loved me, when she loved me…}
"Cause we had loved."
"When somebody loved me everything was beautiful. Every hour we spent together lives within my heart." He touched the headstone, tracing the letters with his wrinkled finger. "I could never forget her. She made me smart, she made me needed. She made me beautiful. When she loved me."
And then she approached, setting a cool hand on his wrinkled cheek. The bobbing and shaking stopped. "You will always live in my heart. I still love you, Daisuke." And she kissed his forehead.
And the wrinkles of his face disappeared. The gray of his hair turned to a maroon brown turned spiky. His body bulkened and his skin darkened.
And she pulled him to his feet and ran a hand over his smooth tanned skin face. "You are beautiful." And she pulled him from the site under the sakura tree where two headstones sat, side by side. Daisuke Motomiya, one read. And the other Hikari Motomiya.
This is the first thing I wrote that made me cry. I cried as I wrote this. Okay, I'm not sure if you understand what happened. The old man was Daisuke. Both he and Kari were spirits, they were both dead. There it is. Please review.
