I smiled as my Harry zoomed around the room, much to amusement of my husband, who was making him laugh with puffs of multi-coloured smoke from his wand. James was grinning at him. "He'll make a wonderful Quidditch player." He had said, and I couldn't disagree with him. He had given up sulking with me, because I wouldn't let him take Harry Trick or Treating this year. He'd been looking forward to it, especially since he hadn't seen Sirius in months.
I felt sorry for him, but it was necessary, I did not wish to think what would happen if we left the house. Voldemort had been looking for us for over a year. Sirius had asked us to switch secret-keepers several months ago, and so we had. Peter had seemed pleased to be presented with the task, though he certainly seemed down the last time he was here.
I signed off on the letter to Remus, and put it on the table for me to send tomorrow. I walked over to where Harry had just landed on the floor, and picked him up. He giggled at me and I smiled back, before stooping to kiss my husband good night. I took Harry up stairs, and was on the landing when I heard James shout from behind me.
"Lily, it's him – take Harry and run – I'll hold him off!"
Him? No! How-?
I had no time to think as I ran into Harry's room. I tucked him into his cot, and looked into Harry's eyes. "Harry, mama loves you, dada loves you –" My voice cracked as I heard him, Lord Voldemort, in my house. Everything was lost now, but I would not upset my son. "- Harry, be safe, be strong." I stood up, and turned to leave, just as I heard what I didn't want to hear.
My husband was dead from the curse before he hit the floor.
"Not Harry – please." I choked back my tears, as he entered the room.
"Stand aside girl." His high voice, was cruel, cold and emotionless, his red, snake-like eyes were glaring at me with such distaste.
"No – please – not Harry!"
"Stand aside, you silly girl."
He raised his wand higher, pointing it at my face, and I knew, if I would not move from his path willingly, he would make me. James I'm so sorry.
"Avada-"
