The emotional challenge - Boredom

Summer Boredom

It was another one of those days that dragged on, with nothing but boredom coating every passing moment as it crept by at a pace that was slower than a sleeping snail. Their homework had long been consumed and lay neatly on the desk, pieces of parchment laying side by side as the black ink dried. They were from different schools so in their boredom they had even completed the other's homework as well as their own. The entire process had been surprisingly quick and effortless.

They were relaxing under one of the trees in Godric's Hollow, thinking of ways to relieve their desire to do something more than they were doing. Their entire situation was made much worse by the fact that their minds usually worked faster than that of normal people and this slump was beginning to drive them crazy. They were both lying on the soft ground, staring at the expanse of green above them and on occasion the odd glimpse of blue sky that lay behind it.

They had experienced idleness much more often because at that point their minds could still be at work while their body remained inactive. Boredom was an entirely different matter altogether. Boredom meant that even your brain was slowing down and going to sleep along with your body. It was so similar yet to different to exhaustion.

"I've got a new great ambition!" Gellert mumbled out, words barely formed and sounding lazy in a way that was extremely uncharacteristic for him.

"What would that be?" Albus replied in a manner similar to Gellert.

"My ambition is to die of exhaustion rather than boredom," Gellert groaned out.

Albus laughed. They had exhausted all the books they could get hold off and had even gotten tired of discussing their future plans for the 'Greater Good.' Plans which were entirely plausible with their magical power and formidable minds, even one of them could complete the task but with both of them they would be unstoppable. The uselessness of the summer holidays was wearing them down as they found themselves with nothing to do increasingly often.

Aberforth was always perfectly happy with taking care of Arianna and Miss Bagshot never had anything for them to do either, leaving them with no duties or responsibilities that would take any time away from this state of mind they were currently in. It was not pleasant and he was mentally vowing to do whatever it takes never to be put in this sort of position again. He was sure Gellert was promising something similar within his own mind as well. He would gladly choose torture over this.

Albus sighed. There really was nothing that they could do. He only hoped his sanity survived this horrifying experience. For all their genius, there was no solution to this problem.
