Chapter One – My Last Moments: Remus Lupin
By Shadow of the Blue Moon
The air crackled with magic as Death Eaters and Order members duelled each other, creating a display of brightly-coloured lights, most of them deadly. Tonight, it was the battle that would end the war, the final battle. And Hogwarts was the unlucky place chosen for the battlefield. I wasn't sure if Hogwarts, magically powerful as she was, would be able to stand this. After all, the Hogwarts Four had built this castle to learn in, not to battle in.
I crouched on a hidden branch of a tree, my eyes scanning the scene before me. While the duelers on the towers created plenty of dazzling displays of magic, there was no time to look at them. Even a second I spent distracted could be the cause of my death. Out of the corner of my eye, I watched Colin Creevey fall to a Death Eater, Antonin Dolohov. Colin Creevey had always been one of my favourite students back when I was teaching. A budding photographer, a loyal Harry Potter fan, one of those that actually bothered to study hard: I always thought he should have been in Hufflepuff. But no matter, he was still a favourite student of mine.
I jumped out of the tree, hoping to land on Dolohov. Instead, I missed and landed behind him. Of course, I started to curse him – but he spun around quickly. "Remus Lupin," he snarled. "The half-breed." Before I could open my mouth to say anything, he cast a green spell at me.
"Avada Kedavra." The last two words I would hear in my life. The realisation hit me like a ton of bricks. I was dying. Of course, I hadn't expected to live very long, being a werewolf, but I hadn't imagined dying like this. I had always imagined dying in a safe and warm bed, with Nymphadora and my son Teddy at my side. Not in the darkness of a battle, struck down by Dolohov.
As the green curse got closer, my life flashed before my eyes. First there was a memory of my parents, happily playing with me. Then there was the time I first went to Honeydukes. After, the memory of my Hogwarts letter, followed up by my first glimpse at Hogwarts. Finally, the other Marauders and Lily together, us five joking around with baby Harry in Lily's arms.
As the curse hit me, I saw one last image of Teddy and Nymphadora, both waving happily at me. I waved back – and then there was nothing.
