The Small Things
It was the small things. The way Rodney snapped at people a lot more then usual. The way Carson's hair seemed ever so slightly longer. The way John's and Rodney's bickering seemed to be just a little bit harsher. The way people reacted when she asked them to do something. And the way John never seemed to smile at her anymore. Made her realize something was wrong.
She didn't know what to do. She couldn't speak to any of the member of her expedition. She couldn't trust any of her closest friends. The people she'd come to respect and trust. And love?
The more she thought about it. The more she noticed more things that just weren't right. She couldn't find her favorite red shirt. She found Caldwell standing, staring out at the sea, on her and John's balcony. And she watched as Rodney walked into a meeting wearing a purple shirt.
She was certain now she couldn't possibility be in the right reality. She tried to remember when everything was normal. Was it after the last mission everything changed? How could she not notice that they acted different? How could she get back to the people that was hers?
She went over everything she did in the past month searching for that one instance when everything changed. Every minute that passed, she missed her home all the more. Even though was sitting in her own office.
Could she tell these people she didn't think she belonged with them? She could imagine the hurt on there face. The coldness growing in their eyes. Carson would lock her up for sure.
Did they know she was missing? Could they tell the difference? She knew she had to risk it. She couldn't stay in the cold alternate universe much longer. Her heart couldn't take it. She had to fill its empty void.
She just had to figure out how and who should tell.
She approached him slowly, nervously. She couldn't believe she was doing this. Every bone in her screamed for her to stop. But, she had to do it. If not for them. For herself. Or she would never forgive herself.
"John."
He turned. Her stomach jumped into her throat. She almost lost her nerve to speak.
"We need to talk." she said, breathing out slowly, trying to calm her racing heart.
He frowned impatiently, "What?"
This gave her courage to speak. "I don't belong here."
"You've got that right. It finally took you long enough to figure it out." He said hardly paying attention to her.
It stung. Even though it wasn't her John. It still stung. She couldn't imagine how she ever figured she belonged here.
"No, John." He turned and stared harshly at her. "I don't belong here but not in the way you are thinking."
She managed to convince him. It had been hard but she had.
Together they convinced a few other people. It had been John that figured out what had sent her to this cold and harsh place. Even in this universe, it was John that ended up being the one to help her.
It was a small hand mirror they had found a while ago. Similar to the mirror Daniel Jackson had found but a whole lot smaller.
She held the mirror in her hands. But, nothing changed. She felt tears gather up in her eyes, threatening to spill over. She looked around Rodney's lab seaching for a difference.
She looked at the pair of them their faces grim. The empty void in her heart growing slightly larger and more cold as the desperation set in.
Then, he smiled. And she knew she was home.
