"I really like you, you know."

Lily was lying next to him with her head tucked just under his chin, and she broke the silence - a contented, peaceful silence, but a silence all the same - with her declaration. She felt his chuckle vibrate through his chest, but when she didn't laugh, James shifted slightly, attempting to peer down at her and gauge her expression.

"That's good," he said, still amused.

She sighed, a grudging smile on her lips. "Oh, shut up. You know what I mean." James was quiet and she took it as an invitation to elaborate. "With some people, there's the initial attraction, and then after a few weeks or so you start finding out what they're really like and they aren't what you thought at all and everything goes a bit rubbish, but with you it's not like that."

He made a noise in the affirmative and pulled her closer, his free hand adjusting his glasses on its path from behind his head to her hair.

"I mean, I'm still finding out new things about you all the time," Lily continued, "but it just adds to you. Does that make any sense?"

"Kind of. To be honest, Lil, I've mostly given up with trying to decipher what you say." His girlfriend was a little kooky at times - from the chapped but bright purple varnish adorning her fingernails to the vibrant red platforms she'd asked him to get her for her birthday, rambling about some girl called Dorothy.

Lily poked him. "That's rude."

He laughed again, and this time she did too.

"You're crazy," James told her affectionately. "But I try and muddle my way through."

Lily propped herself on her elbow and rested her chin in her palm, looking at her boyfriend.

"I suppose what I'm trying to say," she said slowly, "is that I reckon you're a keeper."

He tutted. "I know you're not mad on Quidditch, Evans, but I thought you'd at least know that I'm a Chaser."

Lily didn't know whether to be annoyed that he'd taken her declaration seemingly without a second thought or to laugh at the comment - she found herself doing that a lot, even when he said things that really shouldn't have been funny. Frankly, it was pathetic, but he just had a way of making everything seem lighter and more entertaining.

In the end, she cocked an eyebrow.

"A keeper, Potter. Someone to stick with. As my mum would say, a 'goodun'."

"I know, I'm only pulling your leg," James said, grinning. His face grew serious for a moment. "You mean it?"

She considered him and nodded. "I do."

His smile returned. "I'll hold you to that."
