I'm A Nurse - By Annanara
When I wrote this, I had noticed Rory mentioned that he's "a nurse" several times and just kinda brought this idea to mind. And after that finale, to hear it said TO him and not FROM him, I just love it! Many thanks to my bionic twin Pam for beta-reading!
I'm a nurse.
Three simple words to describe my life. Three words that represent so much. It's not just a job title; it's who and what I am. It means being Amy's human husband from Leadworth. It means caring for those we come across in our travels who need help. It means traveling through time and space with a madman in his magical blue box.
I've found myself saying it more lately, "I'm a nurse." Not because I'm trying to be impressive or suggest that I'm not somehow just useless Rory. There's always a portion that I never say. More to the spoken words than are actually said. And honestly, it's a bit Star Trek.
"I'm a nurse⦠not a centurion."
Not a centurion.
Those three words describe a life that never was. Three words that represent hundreds of lifetimes full of triumphs, downfalls, wars, and most of all, waiting. The long life of a plastic centurion, The Lone Centurion, for whom guardianship had become a way of life. And all of those memories are now crammed haphazardly in my brain. Most times I can ignore them, like passing by a room where the door is slightly ajar. But occasionally the door swings open brining forth all those memories and all those lifetimes, past and present, get muddled together.
So I have to remind myself. I need this three word mantra spoken aloud. I need to remember that "I'm a nurse." Because, if I'm not, then who and what am I?
