I don't own the Demonata series. This takes place a while after Hell's Heroes.

Bec POV

Watching my rath grow without me was hard.

The hardest thing was seeing Fiachna get married. We, as in, Kernel, Grubbs and I, had chosen to not let ourselves be born. The risks were too great. We couldn't let the Kah Gash take hold in anyone. Fiachna loved me, he let that be known just before he died, but because I never was born, he didn't fall in love with me. He's happy though. And I'm happy for him.

Banba survived too. She's not with my old rath, though. She wasn't native to the McConn rath, and there's no magic in the world, so they didn't have need of her services as Priestess.

I was watching the rath one day, when Grubbs came to see me.

"Watching your rath?" he asked.

I looked at him, then sighed. "It's hard. Seeing your family grow without you, not even missing you, because you didn't actually exist."

"I'd guess."

"At least they don't die. If we had left the world to draw out the way it did before, five people from our rath would have died, and one from another."

Grubbs watched me for a second. "You know, you never told me, or Kernel, what happened."

I looked back at the rath, seeing Ronan and Lorcan play fighting under a tree. I smiled.

I started to tell him a brief overview of my life. He smiled when I told him how scatter-brained Bran was before. But by the end, he was looking at me differently; with a new pity. I frowned at him.

"I don't want your pity."

"Sorry," he muttered. He looked away for a second. I turned back to my rath's life. Connla was talking to Fiachna now. I hissed.

"What?" Grubbs said, startled.

"I'm going to kill that traitor. He's talking to Fiachna."

"Could you point out who is who to me?"

I pointed to different people from my rath, saying their names.

We were silent for a second, just watching. The sun was falling over the horizon, staining the sky into red and orange streaks. People started to prepare for the night.

"Shall we go back?" Grubbs said to me. I quickly looked around for any threats, then nodded.

We went back up to our... well, I suppose you could call it a 'residing-place'.

My rath was safe. And I would watch over them, being the guardian angel who lived with them in a previous world.
