Please Read and Review, or Sai's Abs shall put you on speedial and be forced to call you up when you're least expecting it. And what do abs say when they call you? That will be your displeasure to find out should you make the decision to read and not review.

Note: I don't own Naruto, cuz if I did Obito would never had died.

Distant

By Hammy Uchiha

A whisper of wind, like a gentle breath, tickled the long grass where Sasuke lay staring at the endless night sky. It was so vast, so beautiful, so…untouchable. The distant stars were amazing, littered across the unbroken sea of night.

Itachi lounged back against a log and prodded the blazing fire with his stick one more time. The crackling of the flames made it almost seem as though they weren't so far away from the rest of the world. Sasuke let out a deep sigh. Itachi listened up. He knew his little brother well; he was summoning the courage to ask him something. Itachi beat Sasuke to the gun.

"What is it, ototo-san?" he asked. Sasuke's eyes were still pinned on the deep dark blue sky littered with millions of little gleaming lights. The little Uchiha shifted himself slightly as Itachi joined him in the grass, hands behind head staring into the night sky.

"What is death, niisan?" he asked. Itachi closed his eyes for a moment, pondering what Sasuke meant by that.

"How come you always ask such difficult questions, Sasuke?" he replied. Sasuke smiled and waited for the answer. Itachi took a deep breath. "Death is the ending of all vital functions or processes in an organism or cell," he answered at last, sounding like a walking dictionary. Sasuke's brow furrowed.

"That's not what I meant," replied Sasuke. Itachi looked up into the night sky. What about this provoked him to ask that?

"Then what did you mean?" asked Itachi. Sasuke rolled over to his side to look Itachi in the eye. His older brother rolled over as well. Sasuke looked afraid for some reason.

"I mean, why do we die?" asked Sasuke again. It was Itachi's turn for his brow to furrow.

"I don't know Sasuke," replied Itachi softly.

"Then why do you kill people?"

"It's my job as a member of the ANBU," said Itachi immediately without even thinking about it. Why do I kill people? Sasuke turned back to the sky.

"It's about time to turn in, doncha' think?" asked Itachi pulling a sleepy Sasuke to his feet. He helped the little boy stumble to their tent, unzipping the door Sasuke crawled into the tent as Itachi took a bucket of water and tossed it onto the flames. With a sizzling hiss the fire went out and suddenly the night seemed darker, colder, and bigger. As the distant sky threatened to swallow him, Itachi crawled into the tent as well. Sasuke was already curled up in his sleeping bag. Grinning fondly at his little brother, Itachi kicked off his sandals.

Tugging off his shirt and pants, Itachi crawled into his sleeping bag in his boxers, and closed his eyes.

"Are we rivals…or best friends?" asked Sasuke quietly in the darkness. His voice was heavy with sleep. Itachi opened his eyes.

"Where are you getting these from ototo-san?" he said with a laugh, the little boy smiled. "We're both," answered Itachi. "More importantly we're brothers, and we've always got each other's back,"

Sasuke yawned. "Really?" he asked sleepily.

"Really," returned Itachi with a smile.
