It Was Just A Glancing Shot
I was running backwards, trying to cover our retreat. The Wraith were advancing on us steadily, going down only to jump back up, ready for round two. Ford and Teyla were in an unknown location. Our first trip out of the gate since the security debacle with the Athosians, and I didn't know whether I should be relieved it wasn't one of them or worried because it wasn't one of them.
The last thing I saw was a flash of blue coming straight at me. I tried to move, but my backward momentum didn't give me time to dodge the stun weapon. It hit my shoulder and I felt a million shards of glass course through my body, and blackness snatched me away before I could feel the impact of my body with the ground.
I came to in the infirmary. Beckett was hovering...getting to be a bit of a joke how many times I've woken up to that guy hovering over me. What, three now? Maybe only two...but two is too many at this point.
"How do you feel Major?"
How did I feel? Shaky...numb...not so good. I looked harder at Beckett. He was hiding something.
"What's wrong?"
I could tell Beckett was preoccupied, bothered by something. I could see the hesitation written clearly across his face and body language, he was standing there stiff, and uncomfortable. I narrowed my eyes, getting a bad feeling, "Teyla and Ford?"
"Major..." Beckett warned, "You need to rest..."
"I need to know what's going on." I said, projecting strength I didn't feel into my words.
Beckett was staring at me, trying to decide what to do. I stared back, just as resolute. He sighed, "If I tell, promise me you'll stay in bed?"
I frowned, "Tell me."
It wasn't a request this time. "Crap." Beckett pulled a chair near my bed, and sat down, "Teyla and Ford didn't make it back to the gate."
I threw the sheet off my legs, getting ready to leave. Beckett put a restraining hand on my shoulder, pushing me back against the bed easily...too easily. "You're not going anywhere."
"I need to get my people."
"You need to rest. You've barely recovered from that bug, this on top of it...no." Beckett was all business, and I was getting a taste for how serious our usually easy-going doctor could be.
This was going to require a bit more wrangling than usual. "Let me find out what's going on. I'll come back."
He was staring at me again. I hoped he'd buy it. "Right back?" He said.
"Scout's honor." So what if I was never a scout.
"Major, I'm only doing this because I'm as worried about them as you are." He pulled his hand back, sighing, "I can't believe I'm letting you go..."
"You won't regret it." I assured him, getting to my feet, and finding how weak I still was. I plastered on a grin, "I'm fine."
He snorted, but didn't say anything. Luckily he'd never been shot with one of the Wraith weapon's otherwise he'd know how much I was lying. I took my shirt from his hand, and slipped it over my head, tugging it down in a quick motion, all ready half out the door.
"Major?"
I turned back just enough to see him roll his eyes, "Your boots."
I looked down at my feet. Damn.
