Hello everyone! I have a new one-shot to share with you. It was beta read by WhenUniveresCollide. On my profile page, I have a poll up at the time that I am posting this.
Batman and Robin were in the Batmobile on their way to the Batcave after patrol one rainy night when Robin turned to Batman. "I want to tell Wally my identity."
Batman was quiet for a moment before replying. "No."
Robin bristled slightly. "Why not? I trust him! We've been best friends for years! We've saved each other multiple times. He would never tell anyone our names. Why don't you trust him to keep our identity secret?! He would keep it to his grave!"
"It's not that I don't trust him to do that!" Batman paused for a moment, thinking how to best communicate with the hot-headed teenager. "The problem is that I trust him too much to do that. I trust that he would keep the secret to his dying breath. That is what I am afraid of!"
This shocked Robin, causing him to ask in a whisper, "What do you mean?"
Batman sighed before he answered, "I always said no to you telling Wally your identity because of what could happen to Wally. Do you know how much danger that would put him in? You want to tell your best friend information that our enemies would kill for? Just think what could happen to him if word ever got out that Kid Flash knew the most protected secret of the Justice League."
Batman's fingers were now tapping the steering wheel slowly, and when he spoke, his voice was low and thick with veiled emotion. "Before I met you, there was this woman that I loved named Allison. I trusted her and decided that I would tell her my secret. When I did tell her, she promised that she would take the secret to her grave. Unfortunately, Black Mask somehow found out that she knew the identity of Batman and went after her. He captured and tortured her, but she wouldn't tell him my identity. Eventually, his patience ran out, and he killed her. I wasn't fast enough to save her. For your sake, I don't want what happened to Allison to happen to Wally."
Only Robin could have possibly noticed the emotion that entered into Batman's voice. He replied to his mentor with a shaky: "Ok."
Batman deliberated for a second before speaking again. "Now that you know why I have always said no, you can make an informed decision about whether or not you will tell Wally your identity. You have my permission to tell him if you want to do it."
Robin already had experienced so many people that he cared about dying. He wasn't sure if he still wanted to tell Wally his identity if it meant that it increased the risk of his best friend getting killed.
