Watching the one you love walk away is the hardest thing to do.
If anyone should know that, it was Samwise Gamgee.
He'd lost count of the amount of times he'd had to watch Frodo walk away from him. And after the years, after all they'd been through, this is what it came to.
He was being left behind for the last time.
He'd thought heartbreak was when Frodo had told him to go home, on the stairway to Mordor. By the Valar, he remembered that day so well. It had seemed as if the very fires of Mount Doom were burning in his heart, so intense was the pain.
"Go home, Sam. I don't need you anymore."
Those would be the words that would haunt him forever. And now, this.
Frodo was leaving him for the Elves, and their Grey Havens. As was Gandalf, and Bilbo.
As Frodo handed him the leather bound book containing Bilbo's tale, and their own, written by Frodo, he felt something lodged in his chest as heavy as the book in his hands...solid, real. And when Frodo told him to that the last few pages were for him, he knew that this was the end.
Sam noticed that Frodo's eyes were sad as they locked gazes. He knew this wasn't easy on him, either. But both knew that the Shire was no longer what Frodo's heart called for, and both knew that the bond between them was no longer strong enough to chain Frodo down.
He needed more. And Sam would always give Frodo what he needed, even if it cost him his heart.
He would watch him walk away for the last time, because it was the only thing he could do.
He would allow himself to be left behind, this one last time.
