I wrote this for an assignment. I thought that Éowyn and Arwen needed a spotlight now and then.

One autumn morning, I walked into the woods, having no idea that my life would be changed forever. I would make a friend. I am Éowyn, the shieldmaiden of Rohan, and I'm often isolated. Most of my time is spent looking after Théoden, my uncle who seems to be ailing rapidly. I spend my rare free time in the woods. The woods are clean and calm, the exact opposite of Rohan, with all the young children running around. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it makes it hard to think. I walked silently, barely rustling a leaf. When I reached the stream, someone was there. Although I noticed her, she didn't notice me. Noticing that she seemed busy, I walked deeper into the forest. At the heart of the forest is where she noticed me. She was just as startled as I had been to discover that someone else came into the forest sometimes. After we stared at each other for quite some time, she spoke.

"Hi, I'm Arwen Evenstar."

Before long, we became close friends. She told me that she preferred to be called Arwen and I told her about Rohan and its splendor. We talked about all kinds of things and built a tree castle. But Arwen and I are very different. She is an elfin princess, and I'm a shieldmaiden sworn to protect my city. The calmness of our meetings in the woods was shattered when Arwen told me of the Fellowship that had formed in Rivendell and the burden it bore. She said that it was stopping in Rohan on the way to its destination.

"Arwen, as much as I'd like you to stay, you'll be in danger if you stay here."

"Won't you be in danger? If I have to go, you're coming with me!"

"I have to stay! My home is Rohan and Théoden needs me! Besides, I have many years of weapon training, and you don't. I couldn't even attempt to teach you in one day." The argument continued, but I won.

"Ok, I'll leave, but please come get me the moment that the Fellowship leaves Rohan."

"I will," I promised her. At least I could find my way to Rivendell from Rohan. When the fellowship came, only a few of the people/hobbits/dwarves/elves that had set out were there. When they came to the throne room, Gandalf said that my uncle the king was being controlled by Saruman through his servant Grima Wormtounge. Furthermore, he said that Saruman had promised Grima that he could marry me once Théoden was overthrown. At this point I couldn't take it anymore. I gave a startled gasp and left that stuffy room. I wanted to get as far away from that room as possible. I went to the place in the woods where Arwen and I met. Once I caught my breath, I realized where I was and wondered if I would ever see her again. Sometime later, the Rohirrim was called to the aid of Gondor. I knew that if Gondor fell, the darkness form the east would slowly spread, eventually devouring even Rivendell. If only for the sake of my friend, I had to fight. I disguised myself as a man named Dernhelm, and rode, taking the hobbit Merry, who had also wanted to fight but couldn't, along with me. Once we got there, things were looking bad. A Black Rider was battling Theoden, and I was filled with rage at seeing my uncle hurt. I attacked and I worked together with Merry to bring it down. As I succumbed to the illness known as Black Breath, one thought remained in my head. Did I protect…you…Arwen?
