Life was like glass.
Standing there, in front of his best friend's casket, Rodney was aware of just how fragile life was.
He tended to think of everyone around him as indestructible, that hell itself could not stop the people of Atlantis. When it came right down to it, everyone he knew, everyone he maybe considered a friend, would be dead without Carson. And now he was gone. Their shining beacon of hope, was gone. Listening to Amazing Grace played by an instrument he normally would never have tolerated, he found that life was like glass. You could reinforce it, make it more durable, hell, even make it bullet proof. But in the end, all glass shatters. He supposed he should be thankful that Carson had died doing what he was meant to, but Rodney could not bring himself to think that way. He could have saved him. He could have protected his glass, but he didn't. And now because of him, the most influential piece had shattered.
His windshield was gone, and he would never be the same.
A great light had gone out, indeed.
