Carvings
Nibelheim was burning. Debris lay everywhere: collapsed buildings, broken bodies, the metal structures of unfinished construction impaling the land. It was to this nightmare that he had awoken to.
This is what happens when you resist me, my son.
Jenova.
His lips curled at the name. She that insisted being called "Mother" had made him do this obscenity, this act that had destroyed his humanity.
He had hurled his Masamune somewhere far away, yet still he didn't fear the fierce callings of the scavengers. Only a stupid, likely dead, SOLDIER would be caught with out a weapon.
A slight noise, a raspy gasp, alerted him to a sign of life. Quickly, he jumped across the metal bones, finding the survivor, the last survivor, half hidden by a slab of concrete that had created an overhang, providing no space for the victim to move. Easily he lifted the stone, revealing the young woman underneath.
"No, please, no," he pleaded in broken whispers as he lifted the limp shoulders, cradling her in his arms, her head back as his arm gently held her neck.
"Amarantine?" he pleaded her name so gently, so caringly. Her red-brown hair cascaded to the ground, only some of it lifting as it followed her head. Her eyes opened into half-slits, the blue ice softening its cold touch as she saw his face. Her trembling hand, splattered with the same blood that ran out of her body, touched his face, streaking red on pale canvas. She took the hand that wrapped around her taking no heed of the pain of the movement. He shifted her to keep her in his arms. His hand followed hers, laid gently above her heart.
"Sephiroth," she whispered, her musical voice rapidly losing notes. "Keep me with you. Place my soul next to yours."
She waited until he slowly slid his knife out, reluctant to harm her, but she smiled and nodded before her head hung back, her head went limp.
Tears littered the cut that carved out her still-warm heart. Another well placed incision, and his chest was open, bleeding out his life, his blood mixing with hers. He slid her heart next to his, guarding it from Jenova's grasp. This was their final wish together.
Never again would their love be separated.
