"Why's the sky blue?"
"Hm?" Jade looked up from her magazine, absentmindedly turning a page to reveal a scowling band, arms crossed and tattoos blazed on their arms.
"Why's the sky blue?" Cat rolled a blue crayon between her fingers, half coloured-in picture before her. Cat didn't much like Jade's room; it was so dark and gloomy, and she had a stuffed crow that Cat was always sure was watching her. But she liked hanging out with Jade, and she thought Jade did too; she always had a colouring book ready for her when Cat came over, and she didn't roll her eyes as much as she used to. Sometimes she'd let Cat paint her nails too.
"I don't know. Because it's sad." Jade shifted to face Cat, where she was sprawled out on Jade's floor, crayons scattered around her.
Cat's eyebrows turned up. "Why's it sad?"
Jade resisted the urge to roll her eyes, trying to read the article before her. She really liked this band. They were alright. "Because you wouldn't be quiet."
"Oh." Cat looked down to her picture. "Then I'll make it yellow! Yellow is happy!"
"You know what else is yellow?" Jade raised an eyebrow at Cat, smirking.
Cat blinked. "Oh. What colour should I make it then?"
"Make it black. In fact, make your whole picture black."
Cat's eyebrows furrowed in innocent confusion. "But then how will I see anything?"
"Pretend it takes place at night."
Cat kicked her legs back and forth, nodding. "'Kay 'kay!" She grabbed a black crayon, poising it over the page.
Jade sighed, closing her magazine. "Cat, stop." She slid off her bed onto her knees, crawling over to Cat. "I was kidding."
Cat twisted her mouth, looking up to where Jade was leaning over her, a hand plucking the black crayon from her. "But I don't know what colour to make it! Can you help me?"
Jade stared blankly at Cat for a moment, a muscle in her cheek twitching. She glanced back at her magazine, tossed on her covers, and then back to Cat, who was smiling hopefully at her. She ran a hand through her hair, eyes closing for a moment. She let out a long breath. "Fine. But just this one, okay?" A smile burst out on Cat's face. "Move over."
Cat shifted, making room for Jade beside her. "Did you want the green?"
"Yeah."
"Jade, why's grass green?"
"Because you couldn't stay in the lines. Pass me the orange."
