Children of the Moon
PREFACE
Lucas growled at me as I eyed his prey. He was stalking a girl and her boyfriend, walking down a dirt path back to their house, I guessed. He lunged for them, so fast the girl didn't even notice it when the boy was gone. She just continued babbling, telling him about stupid human things. She was so naïve, not knowing that her partner was gone, oh how I did not miss being a human. She asked a question and when the boy didn't answer her, she turned to see he wasn't there. She started to panic, calling his name in fight. I decided to put her out of her misery.
CHAPTER ONE
Werewolf POV (Hayley)
I shifted back into my human form. I sniffed the air for my brother, Lucas, but I caught scent of something else, something oddly close to my scent, but different. Lucas hopped out of a bush beside me, and caught the scent as well. We both stood puzzled, and abnormally still. A growl stirred the air and Lucas and I shifted.
My snow white fur hackled up on my back and Lucas's brownish-black fur did the same. Our yellow eyes hunted the forest for the owner of the strange scent. Not much intimidated us, we were the biggest things we'd ever come across, being the size of large horses. We were in the form of wolves and were indestructible. We were unusually strong and fast and nothing bothered us. We were immortal and we had an extreme temper when the moon was full. I howled, to see what reaction I'd get.
It was deathly quiet for a fraction of a second, and then five wolves, only slightly smaller than us merged into view. These were not werewolves, but they were not regular wolves either. They did not seem threatening, but I didn't want to take a chance. Lucas and I stared at the wolves, waiting for a reaction.
The largest wolf, the reddish-brown one, eased forward, and bowed his head if to say "Peace." I was about to do the same when I caught another scent, a scent that all werewolves despise. Vampire. I lunged in the direction of the scent Lucas on my heels and the other strange wolves right behind me. They must want to kill the tick, too. I jumped into the clearing where I saw a dark-haired vampire draining a deer. She whirled at me her waist-length hair swirled with her speed. She crouched and sprang at me, teeth barred. This was going to be such an easy kill, we had back up and-. The five wolves we on top of Lucas, ripping him to shreds. I let out a feral snarl and leaped for the pile.
The vampire bit into me, her burning venom felt like a million needles stabbing my veins. I'd been bitten before, and my blood would kill off this sensation. The large russet wolf let out a howl and went back to destroying my brother. I struggled underneath the vampire's grip, but she was so strong. Her odd amber eyes were not like any other vampire's I had encountered. I glanced over a Lucas, who had been dismembered. I let out a screech and jumped off the cliff we were on leaving the vampire and other wolves behind.
Jacob POV
"Holy shit, what the hell was that?" Bella screamed, still in a crouch. I buttoned my shorts and shook my head. "Hell if I know, they weren't out kind, but they smelled similar to us." Sam and his pack arrived. I told them what happened and they stared at me in disbelief. Bella gasped suddenly. "Were they Children of the Moon? The things the Volturi thought you guys were six years ago in the clearing?" I frowned. "It is a full moon." Sam glowered down at the side of the cliff. "The fall wouldn't have killed it." He said. "I'll have my pack on patrol, Jake, you and your pack can warn the Cullens." I nodded and thought and Nessie's safety. I phased and I, the pack and Bella rushed home.
