Michael watched the new guy, Haruto Sakaki, absently play with the tab of an empty Coke can. He was the kind of guy that would be more than willing to finish any job asked of him, except for the fact that he had absolutely no clue what parameters said job required. Hell, he still had no idea where the copy machine was. So, no one asked. Amon had ignored him; Kate had been distracted; Doujima had been bored; and Karasuma-san had been forgiving. All different interpretations of patience.
Tapping his keyboard lightly, thoughtfully, Michael called out, "Oi, Haruto."
Light blue eyes turned to Michael, eyebrows raised, expectant.
A wide yawn. "I'm tired. Do you think you could get me a coffee or something?" The movement of scratching his shoulder shifted to rubbing his neck.
Sakaki stared at the crimson can in his hand, almost as if it held answers to questions too embarrassing to ask aloud. Then, with a slightly forced smile, "Sure." He left the room, forgetting to take Michael's hundred yen coin.
Karasuma-san, trying not to be too amused, gave Michael a sympathetic look. "You realize he has no clue where the machine is."
He sighed. "Well, someday he'll learn." Haruto was mutt – a stupidly loyal mutt.
After missing a few turns, Sakaki stood in front of the quietly humming Coca-cola machine. Staring at the contents, he could feel his shoulders fall slightly, dejected by even the vending machine. There were almost two entire rows dedicated to various forms of coffee. Frustrated, he ran a hand through his hair quickly, shoving the coin in the slot.
Lightly punching a button, he retrieved the warm can from the vending machine. The coffee was brand new, so maybe that was a good choice. Although, it had an equal chance of being a horrible choice….
Typing a few more lines of code, Michael looked up, distracted, at the flash of colour as Sakaki reentered the room. Sakaki handed the can of coffee to Michael wordlessly.
"Thank you," Michael accepted it with a smile before his expression shifted into a puzzled one. Flipping the can one-handed around to read the label, "What's this? 'S it new?"
Sitting down, Sakaki scratched the side of his face, smiling nervously. "Yeah, I had no idea what to get. Almost half of that machine is coffee."
"Yeah, probably because people here tend to pull lots of late nights." A punctured hiss sounded through the room as the can was opened, quickly falling short to the hum of the computers. Michael took a drink, making a horrified face. "That's horrible. What the hell were they thinking?"
"Sorry."
"Oh well, caffeine is caffeine," shrugging, nonchalant. "Oh yeah," Michael threw a coin in Sakaki's direction. Dodging it, Sakaki watched as it spun metallically on his desk. "You forgot that," the hacker noted plainly.
Doujima trudged into the room, looking around disinterestedly. Yawning, she glanced pointedly at Sakaki. "I think I need coffee. Go get it?" Before he could answer, mouth hanging open in disbelief, she continued, "I'm tired; like I'm going to get it myself," before throwing herself into a chair.
Noting the slight roll of Sakaki's eyes, Michael suggested helpfully, "Get her the new one." Blinking a few times, Sakaki finally responded with a grin.
