Chapter One: At Merriman's Book Shoppe

One day, Elizabeth Swann, the governor's daughter, and William Turner, the local blacksmith's apprentice, were walking down Main Street, when they saw a sign reading Merriman's Book Shoppe.

"Ooh, a new book shop! Let's go in, Will," said Elizabeth in delight.

"Allright, Miss Swann," replied Will.

"Will, for the thousandth time, it's Elizabeth," Elizabeth said, exasperated, "how many times must I tell you?"

"A thousand and one," answered Will.

Elizabeth rolled her eyes and walked through the doorway, as Will held the door open for her.  Inside the bookstore, the children could see that they were the only customers in the shop.  Elizabeth immediately went right over to a large display of what else? Pirates.  Will stood by the door for a few seconds, then meandered over to a painting of a young with dashing good looks, and a bundle of swords at his feet on the opposite wall.

A few minutes later, an old man with white hair, and square spectacles came hobbling out of the back room with a silver tipped cane in his right hand.  He had robin's egg blue eyes, and a kindly yet wrinkled face.

"Hello, there," he called in a clear yet old voice.

Elizabeth looked up from Pirates of 13th Century Europe and said, "Oh, hello.  You must be Mr. Merriman?"

"Yes, I am, little girl," said the old man, with a warm smile.

"You like pirates, I see," Mr. Merriman continued, noting the book Elizabeth was reading.

"Yes, I do.  My father doesn't exactly approve, though," she said, with a slight blush.

"I can see his point, but then again, pirates are rather fascinating, are they not?" Mr. Merriman replied.

Elizabeth nodded.  Will made a face.

"I prefer swords, and blacksmithing, better," he said.

"So they are," agreed Mr. Merriman, "so they are."

Pirates are blacksmiths as well," said Elizabeth.

"They are indeed," said Mr. Merriman, looking at Will.

"Well, I'm never going to be a pirate," said Will, proudly.

"I'm going to meet one someday," said Elizabeth, looking defiantly at Will, as though she thought he was going to stop her.

"Have you met a pirate, Mr. Merriman?" asked Elizabeth curiously, looking at him.

"I have," he replied softly.

"Do you know any stories?" asked Will.

"I do," said Mr. Merriman, "and I shall tell it you, since I promised Captain Sparrow that I'd tell it to two people when I opened my shop."

Mr. Merriman sat on the floor, Will and Elizabeth did the same.

Once seated, Mr. Merriman said, "This is the story of the Golden Isle…"
