Carlisle changed Edward because Elizabeth asked him to save her son no matter what. As a doctor, shouldn't that happen to him a little more often?
Disclaimer: As much as I wish it were the other way around, I own this plot line, but not Twilight.
If Only Carlisle Changed Everyone Who Asked
Third Person POV
1953
Carlisle was checking in on one of his patients at the hospital. She was middle aged and dying from a severe case of chicken pox that had been left untreated for far too long.
As he walked through the doorway, he spotted her husband sitting by the bed, just as he had been for the past few days. The poor man was distraught; he had recently been informed that her condition was fatal. Upon seeing Carlisle he rose shakily.
"Doctor Cullen," he greeted morosely.
Carlisle nodded. "Evening, sir."
"My wife," blurted the man suddenly, "is there nothing anyone can do for her?"
Carlisle tried his best to phrase his answer without lying. "I'm sorry, but we've tried everything recommended for a case like this. There's nothing more we feel comfortable doing."
Unfortunately for Carlisle, the patient's husband picked up on the way the he had implied there was more that could be done. "So there is something, then?" He waited but Carlisle said nothing. "Please! Please, you must save her! No matter what it takes! Whatever you have to do, do it."
Carlisle was on the verge of replying, but the machines hooked up to the woman started beeping, flashing and everything else that indicated there was something wrong. The hospital was understaffed, so it was left to Carlisle to fix it. He wasted no time in ushering the man out and closing the door behind him. Trying to ignore the beeping, he weighed his options for a moment. Eventually he sighed and started disconnecting the various tubes and wires attached to his patient.
Once the woman was tube free, he put her on a gurney and covered her with a sheet, exactly the same way he had done with Edward all those years ago. He wheeled her through the doorway, ignoring her husband's look of horror, and in the direction of the morgue.
Down in the empty morgue, Carlisle pulled back the sheet and regarded the unconscious patient for a moment. Though he had changed many before, he always felt somewhat guilty. Surely this still made him a monster? According to Edward, he was damning these people, not saving them. How could he know he was doing the right thing? Hearing footsteps coming from down the hall, he abandoned the minute of private reflection and quickly leaned in to bite her neck.
Before the woman could wake and start screaming, he ditched the gurney, picked her up and ran through a back door, headed home.
Climbing in through a window, carrying a screaming woman in a hospital gown, no less, he was met with surprised and annoyed faces from the rest of the Cullen household.
"Dammit, Carlisle!" said Edward, while everyone else nodded in agreement. "That's the second time this week! You have got to stop telling people they have a chance!"
Ah, Carlisle. Can't you just imagine that happening, though? Anyway, enjoy it. I'm trying to update my crossover soon. It's odd, the moment I get back to school I wish I had more time for writing...
