Diablo II
Of Chaos and Madness

Disclaimer: I do not own the rights to Diablo II, nor can I even claim full rights over Otere (the Amazon), for she was birthed in XWP. However... the interpretation of her character is mine, as is Hannah's personality, even if her outward form belongs more to Blizz. The story's also mine... so don't steal! :P

Prologue

My story is an old one.
Once, I belonged to an Amazon tribe of the far north... so far, that the winter snow receded only for a bare few weeks, and its chill remained always. Never have I met another Amazon from my great tribe... only the soft-skinned island-dwellers seeking fortune in the pursuit of evil. Or so it seems, for they all claim, but not adhere to, righteousness.
For years, I lived with my sisters in a small village, one on the border of my peoples' nation. When I was but a child, two great warriors and their army--Xena and Borias, their names were--attacked and razed my village. Xena wished my death... only to be thwarted by Borias, who took me in from the cold. That day, I became an orphan, and swore to one day eradicate the evil of such brigands.
Rash promises for such a young girl. They bound me, both while I remained under Borias' care, and after he and Xena had left the land of my people, leaving behind only a broken shadow of our former glory. But the memory faded until she, Xena, returned some eleven years later, searching for her friend and then seeking to lift the curse a wretched shamaness had placed upon us--with Xena's help, I might add. Soon after she resumed her journey, my promise began to beat on my soul every night as I slept beside Yakut in our yurt.
Soon, the pain, the will that was not my own, forced me to move south. I loaded my horse with supplies and mounted him after a brief farewell to my lover, and through the trees I rode, with nary a glance back.
Only a week into my travels, my horse caught his hoof in a snag during the night and broke his leg... I was forced to slay him for mercy before I continued towards the inexplicable pull. South... towards a sense of great energy, and aching fear. It was some days till I found the source; a shimmering, blue rend in nature's energies, through which I could see people, dressed in attire for a much warmer climate. All screaming for help, surrounded by a group of abominations, walking undead that groaned and swung their fists blindly as they reached for a kill.
What choice did I have? Through the portal, I plunged.
