I imagined this fic based on the end of the Ghost Hunt novels. I should warn you all, though, I haven't read it. I'm taking it from what I read on the net and my own fangirliness. So, if you don't wanna read any SPOILERS, avoid it at all costs!
Disclaimer: I do NOT own Ghost Hunt.

"I love you!"
It would have been easier.
Naru studied Mai slowly, taking special care in memorizing the way her fingers clutched the hem of her skirt. Her skin had never been as pale as his, and Naru secretly relished that. The rush of rose that engulfed her was marvelous to him, a clear sign of her greater liveliness. Mai would never know how many times her boss had stared at the hue of her lips or cheeks. Even her fingertips were rosy.
Where have I seen rosy fingertips before?
Oh, and there was another one. Brown eyes, misty with unshed tears, waited for a reply. He had heard so many songs about green and blue eyes, so many people praise them...And it just eluded him how rich, warm brown had been neglected for so long. And her eyes were warm...The dark rim slowly became chocolate-colored, before growing dark again near the center. And they shone so...
Yes, I have seen eyes glow like that...
And she was trembling. Not from cold or fear. Mai trembled from the sheer strength of her confession, pulled from deep within. Naru discerned her narrow shoulders shaking, her legs apart to stable herself against the monstrous weight her mistake was costing her. Because he was sure she knew it as well. Mai was confessing to the wrong person.
You've always been dreaming about him, haven't you?
"It's not me, Mai. It's Gene."
The careful balance was disturbed, and the confession took her down. The rose he adored was gone, the watery mist broke free from its prison of warmth and the trembling evolved into violent sobs as she sunk to the ground. No, it wasn't him that she loved. It was the gentler, sweeter Gene that visited and guided her so many times in her dreams, whereas his living brother mostly only offered her cold insults.
It would have been so much easier...
Naru waited the eternity-long minutes pass, observed as she subsided and came to terms with the impossibility of her affections. The darkness of his clothes felt like it was seeping into himself, filling him with bitterness. Gene, she loved Gene, lively Gene, glowing Gene, warm Gene, dead Gene.
"N-Naru?"
Her surprise only made it worse. The fact she could not believe he had remained by her side while she mourned the love vanquished before it had a chance to grow. Naru swallowed the solitude and void the girl was inflicting upon him, knowing he was only able to do it because he loved her so. How could he ever leave her without offering any form of comfort?
"Don't cry, Mai. You'll see him again."
Her lips slowly arched into a smile. Yes, she would see Gene again. Surely he wouldn't abandon her! Naru turned his back on her, aware Mai no longer needed him, and tried to find his stony demeanor with each step he took. Would it have been merciful, for both of them, to pretend the breathing twin was indeed the recipient of her love?
It would have been so much easier, pretending it was him.
